Mo.Annual lectureships revive spiritual life on campusThis year, Harding was host for the. seventy-fourth annual lectureships, bringingrogether participants from across theglobe and providing students with opportunitiesto learn from a variety of sources.The theme for this year's lectureshipwas "The Preeminent Christ, The BridgeOver Troubled Waters," with studies focusingo n the book of Colossians. Eightysixleaders presented lectures on va rioustopics, including textual studies from thebook of Colossians and discussions ofspecific issues that will fa ce the church inthe next century. The speakers came froma variety of backgrounds, including membersof Harding's School of Biblical Studies,missionaries around the world, Hardingstudents and high school students.Harding alumni and interested Christiansfrom across the countI)' traveled toHarding for the lectureship to deepentheir biblical knowledge and their awarenessof issues facing the church. Ind.Peak of the Week lifts students' spirits on Wednesday nightsOne of the most difficult aspects of.christian life is keeping focus on thosethings that are truly important. It was achallenge during the1997-98 school year,as it is every year, for Harding studentsto conSistently keep their focus on God.Daily chapel, Bible classes arid worshipservices helped them keep their prioritiesin check and make God the mostimpol1anr part of their lives.As each week got more difficult and theschool work began to pile up, many studentsfound maintaining a positive attitude andkeeping their focus on God increasinglydifficult. For many of them, Peak of theWeek on Wednesday nights was an importantaidin refocusing their lives each week.Held in the Benson Auditorium, Peakof the Week's first 30 minutes typicallyconsisted of singing devotional-type songs.Then, the second half of the service fearureda lesson from College Church of Christ'sminister Bruce McLarty or sometimes a skitbyTheatron. After Peak of the Week concluded,many students continued theirworshiptime by attending Bible srudies offeredin homes around Searcy.The fall semester's theme focusedo n David. "The reason I chose David forour study this semester was [hat his lifetouches on everything from youth to o ldage. By watching David, we see ourselves,"Mcl arty said.Those who regularly attended Peak ofthe Week fou nd the time of worship to bevery worthwhile. Inthose Inoments, we were unawarethat we were the inexpe rienced,ne rvous freshmen; instead, we feltthat we were coming home as weil, to anew falnily of Ch ristia ns, eager to do theLo rd's work.As each new day dawned, manyrelationships blossomed, and dear friendswere. Many Inet their roonUllatesand saw their "home away from home"for the first time during Student Impact.Freshmen who chose to go "potluck"in roommate selection hoped that theirroommate would become one of theirclosest friends or at least SOlneonewith w hom they could live in harmony.Freshman Heather Stansell was pleasedwith the roommate assigned to her. "Itworked out better than I thoughtbecause we respected each other'sprivacy," she said.Another consideration was the sizeo f the room. Whe n they saw the irroom fo r the first time, many freshmenreacted w ith shock and d isbelief,wondering how they would be able fitall their belongings into such a tinyroom, especially since they wouldhave to share this space w ith anotherperson. H owever, most found that thespace a llotted was manageable. "I hadthree cars packed full, and all theseImpact workers helped me move into111y tiny Cathcart r00I11 ," freshman EricaBusby said. "But I made it a ll fit! "As students began to settle into theirdaily routines, they found they had toadjust to overflowing toilets, piles ofdirty clothes in the floor a nd 8 o 'clockclasses in order to survive college life.Dustin Howell was one of manyfreshmen who felt that dorm life was apositive experience. "Dorm life isdefinitely the best part o f college. Carie Loyd received herbachelor of science in education in Familyand Consumer Sciences at the Universityof Central Arkansas . Now, she is pursuingher master's in Harding's Marriage andFamily Therapy program.Though at first they might seem unrelated,Loyd explained the correlation betweenher education degree and the MFTprogram. Education showed her interestin young people, she said, an interest thatwas also reflected in counseling. "I wouldlike to be a high school counselor since Ialready have the education credits. I coulduse my education degree without havingto be in the classroom all day," she said."Or I would like to work in a hospital. I'mcurrently interning at the Baptist RehabilitationInstitute, working with adolescemsinvolved in substance abuse."Loyd originally considered pursuingan undergraduate degree in psychologyor a related field. "I couldn't decide betweenpsychology and family and consumerSCiences, but I didn't like howuncaring the psychology professors atUCA were, so that made up my mind," shesaid. Still wanting to follow her interest inpsychology, she decided to apply ·to theMFT graduate program. Also, peoplesay it's hard to quit a job and give up yoursalary to go back to school, and I didn'thave to deal with that. If I had quit aftermy undergraduate degree, I probablywouldn't have gone back," she said.Loyd found graduate school muchmore intense that undergraduate studies."The first year wasn't too bad, but in thesecond year, the program is all you do.You have no other life," she said. "Thereare more reading assignmems, and youreally have to do them to be able topartiCipate in class.
