Anjelica Huston On Mushrooms, Accidental Perms, And “Giving It Another Year” Before Plastic Surgery

An Oscar-winning actress, director, producer, author and the ultimate ’70s girl-about-town (she dated photographer Bob Richardson and fellow actor Jack Nicholson), Anjelica Huston needs no introduction. Now, as one of the faces of Gucci’s Bloom Profumo di Fiori, the 69-year-old sits down with British Vogue to share her beauty stories – from an accidental perm to drinking mushrooms for breakfast.

On that perm she got one time

I remember going to a hairdresser in Paris and saying, “I want Jackie Onassis hair.” That’s what I wanted but it’s not what I got. They gave me a perm and I had to wear a babushka for about three months until it “relaxed”. There was nothing relaxed about it – I can’t even tell you, it was so bad – there was no way around it, except a babushka! I remember looking at my tight curls as I was leaving the hotel, and I thought, “Oh, hell.” It took three months, and then I had to cut it all off.

On her favourite looks from the ’70s

Cowboy chic. And I say that unequivocally. I’m still a big proponent of cowboy boots and white button-down shirts and cowboy hats. I love the look. Not shoulder pads, because I have big shoulders anyway. They always make me look like a hunchback, and that’s definitely to be avoided. But big skirts I loved – those nice, big, floaty skirts – like an underskirt with a petticoat. ’50s retro, big skirts. Love.

On her go-to confidence trick

I put on a ton of mascara, like four coats of mascara. No specific one, just all of them. All of them all at once.

It [Gucci Bloom Profumo di Fiori] represents what I think is the best of me, which is my romantic and intoxicating qualities – I say that slightly tongue in cheek. But I like it because it’s heavy on tuberose, which has always been a favourite, ever since the early days in the ’60s. Beautiful girls like Marianne Faithfull and Jean Shrimpton – it reminds me of that time – and it’s colourful, warm and romantic.

I had a really good time shooting the campaign – the girls [the campaign also features Jodie Turner-Smith, Florence Welch and Susie Cave] were great, which isn’t always the case. Usually on a movie you’re in a group and you’re like, “Ugh!” I fell in love with Susie Cave, but they’re all gorgeous women and very different – all great fun. It was extremely hot in Italy, but it was good – the food was great and we came back to the hotel in the evenings and splashed around in the pool. It was a wonderful experience.

On the best beauty tip she’s ever been given

I think it was Serge Lutens when he cut my bangs. I was in Paris with Bob Richardson and Serge for Dior, and Bob said, “What are we going to do?” Serge said, “I’d like to cut her hair.” I was fine with it. He gave me a bob – a real bob – and cut my bangs right above my eyes, quite low, and I’ve kept the look ever since.

On her iconic fringe

I hate to tell you but the fringe has disappeared with Covid. I can’t wait to get back to my hairdresser because whenever I do my own fringe, I hack off way too much, so this time I thought I’d just let it grow until I get to see her. Well, you know, it’s three or four months later and the fringe is down to the tip of my nose – it’s not pretty. It’s coming back though, believe me. I’m definitely best with bangs.

On morning mushrooms

I like water with a lot of lemon in it and a nice, fresh, brisk morning walk to start the day. I also very much like this melange of fungi that I’ve been taking instead of coffee or tea in the morning. I drink a combination of six different kinds of mushrooms: cordyceps, lion’s mane, maitake, tiger tail and chaga. They come in powder form and I do a couple of teaspoons of all of them with lemon and hot water and it makes a brothy thing – a witch’s brew. It makes me feel so much better than hateful coffee.

On her evening skincare routine

I wash my face with something – I don’t even know what, some sort of toner. And then I splash water and stuff. And then there’s a fantastic world of serums. I love serums. I layer them – I don’t know exactly if they’re efficient or not but I do love them. I have a really good vitamin C one that I use.

On plastic surgery

When I look down in the mirror, my neck isn’t exactly what it used to be. I figure that maybe I should do something about it, but then it’s a slippery slope. Once you start on the neck you’ve got to pick up the jowls and… I’m not sure. I think I’ll give it another year and see how I feel, which is what I’ve been saying for years now! [Laughs]. Having been through a few non-elective surgeries, I hate the feeling, and I don’t like the idea of the knife – I like the country life better. I smile a lot and everyone goes, “Oh, she has such a friendly face!”

On her hair routine

I wash it every single day, which is what you’re not supposed to do. But I have this lovely shampoo by Kérastase, and their conditioner is great too.

On keeping well

I try with meditation – I’ve done it a few times but it doesn’t really stick or do it for me. I love the idea, but i think I’m too lightweight for it or something. I do like yoga a lot. I like stretching like a cat. I also like dancing a lot and I dance whenever possible. It’s hard to dance these days but I think it should come back. Along with big skirts, I’d like to see an upsurge in dancing when Covid is over. I like writing, too. I think just so long as you stay active and try and keep your brain active, that’s the best.
