Reinhardt Søbye "Dreams"

Toho Gallery
Finished

Artists

Reinhardt Søbye
Two exhibitions before, the artist switched to using digital prints processed on a computer, and his previous exhibition at Toho Gallery featured prints with several layers of digitalized hand-drawn elements added on. Since then, Søbye's style has rapidly matured and become world-class. Thanks to the economic development in Norway resulting from the exploitation of its offshore oil fields, large Norwegian banks have built up collections of Søbye's digital prints. While Japanese museums in the provinces have been deferring the purchase of new acquisitions amid economic difficulties, several European and American museums have been competing to acquire Søbye's works. While "war" has been his main subject, it's been processed and matured into the concept of "dream - violence and victims", which mainly deals with the issue of Megumi Yokota, one of the Japanese nationals who were abducted by North Korea. Such a sense of "maturity" can be also seen in dual character (being both digitally manipulated and hand-drawn) existing in his work.
