On Topic - Off Topic Check in Boardmaker Tool
Description
This 3 part check in Chart is for a student who struggles with staying on topic during conversation and when engaged in an activity. I created this 3 part chart, explaining what on and off topic means, and what to do when a comment is off topic during conversation. We played a game where I came up with some scenarios ( ex. We are talking about the weather outside; I then say "Chocolate is my favorite treat!"- is this on or off topic?- This comment is OFF TOPIC.) When the comment is off topic, we discuss what we should do with it ( lock it in our brain/head for later) and if its on topic, that we still need to wait our turn to share ( Ex. "The weather is rainy and cloudy today.") I also use hand motions (hands linked together like puzzle pieces for on topic, and hands making an "X" or breaking something for off topic) to remind my student what the terms mean.
