A red echidna from Angel Island, and guardian of the Master Emerald. He was first introduced as an antagonist, having been told by Dr. Eggman that Sonic and Tails intended to steal the Master Emerald. Eggman eventually betrays Knuckles and attempts to steal the Master Emerald for himself, which forced Knuckles to accept Sonic and Tails' help in getting it back. Afterward, Knuckles would then be one of the duo's chief allies in fighting the doctor, but his guardian duties keep him out of the action most of the time.

    Overview

Knuckles the Echidna is the sole remaining descendant of the Echidna tribe and the last echidna on earth. He guards the Master Emerald, which controls the Chaos Emeralds. His dominant trait is that of superhuman strength, and the two spikes on his knuckles, from which his name is derived. He uses his clawed fists to dig and scale walls. Knuckles has spent most of his life atop Angel Island alone, which makes him fairly independent and introverted. He can also glide using his dreadlocks. His final concept was the result of testing dozens of different ideas and inspiration from different animals.

    Personality

Knuckles is known for his short temper and hot-headed nature, but he is also known for his loyalty to his friends. In the games, Knuckles is often portrayed as a loner who is suspicious of others and quick to anger. However, he is also shown to be a loyal friend who is willing to risk his life for his friends, as he is willing to leave his post to be a faithful and brave-hearted hero. He can be gullible at times, having been tricked into allying himself with Robotnik, but his heart is in the right place, and he never means anything nefarious. Knuckles is very devoted to protecting the Master Emerald and rarely cares for anything that isn’t as important or more important.

    Relationships

    • Knuckles is one of Sonic’s greatest rivals, yet a Right-Hand Man to the Blue Blur.
    • He doesn’t have the best Connection with Rouge, yet he is Selfless enough to help her. There is some rivalry between the two, one being a treasure hunter and the other a Jewel Thief.
    • Like most Mobians, he dislikes Eggman, as he was fooled about 8 Times in the series alone, but he usually fixes his mistakes at the end.
    • Knuckles has a sibling-like relationship with Tails, despite being enemies when they first met.

    Appearances

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994): Knuckles debuted as one of the main antagonists of Sonic The Hedgehog 3. In Sonic and Knuckles, he debuted as a playable character. In the game's story, Dr. Robotnik pits Knuckles against Sonic and Tails, making him believe they intend to take the Master Emerald from him. Robotnik eventually uses Sonic and Knuckles' rivalry against them, and during their fight he takes the Master Emerald. Knuckles, realizing his mistake, forms a temporary alliance to fight against Robotnik, and the story concludes with Angel Island being restored.

    Sonic & Knuckles (1994)

    Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Using the cartridge of Sonic & Knuckles, you can lock it onto Sonic 2 (which changes the title to say "Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2). This allows Knuckles as a playable character. He keeps the ability to glide from Sonic 3, and new secrets are added to places that were unavailable to access without this feature.

Sonic Adventure (1998): Although this was not Knuckles' first appearance as a playable character, he played a large role in the overall story. The completion of Knuckles' story is required to progress onto the final story to finish the game. Sonic Adventure was the first introduction of the treasure hunting stages, which would later be used again in its sequel game, Sonic Adventure 2. These stages would feature 3 shards of the Master Emerald scattered across it, with the player essentially playing a game of hot and cold. The closer you get to the Emerald shard, the more noise the indicator makes. Knuckles story would have him venture across multiple areas in search of said shards to complete the Master Emerald and go back to guarding it, fighting Robotnik's new monster Chaos along the way.

    Sonic Adventure 2 (2001):

Knuckles is also a character in this game. Unlike the previous game, he does not have a solo story, however he is a key playable character in the Hero and Last stories, along with multiplayer. His main plot is finding shards to repair the Master Emerald, however he also must search for other objects, such as keys in the pyramid. Gameplay is similar to Sonic Adventure's treasure hunting. Monitors are present, which give hints towards where the item is, along with the indicator from the previous title.

    Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)

Knuckles is present in this game as well. In this game, he appears throughout Sonic's story and in the Last Story (similar to SA2.) Knuckle's gameplay is severely different than the previous games; there is no treasure hunting at all, but rather Knuckles does Sonic's level until a checkpoint passes where the player returns to Sonic. He has the ability to glide and climb in this game, similar to the Adventure games.
