The Las Vegas Raiders are dealing with their first potential significant injury since training camp began, as NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Monday that starting wide receiver Tyrell Williams is dealing with a torn labrum.

Williams also had the same injury in 2017 while with the Chargers. He spent last season — the first of a four-year, $44 million contract with the — dealing with foot injuries. Williams has recovered from that problem, but he recently tore his labrum and he did not practice Friday when reporters last saw the team on the field.

The plan is for Williams to try to play through the injury. However, if there are complications, he may need surgery, which would end his 2020 season.

It’s possible for a player to play well even through a torn labrum. San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle played two seasons with the injury.

The Raiders intend for Williams to lead their receiving crew this year as he is the most experienced receiver on the roster. Yet, the Raiders are deeper at receiver than they were last year and if Williams’ injury worsens, third-round draft pick Bryan Edwards will get a chance to start.

Edwards, a rookie from South Carolina, has shined at training camp and the Raiders plan on using him in the rotation this season. The hope was for him to became a starter in 2021 but with Williams now in limbo, Edwards may soon be getting a bigger role in the Las Vegas offense.
