Still waters, V8s and sunshine

It’s wonderful to think, amid the mud and thick skies, that there are places where the sea is blue and the
world is luminous. One of those is New England in early summer, which is where Bruno Cianci went
this year, to uncover the story of the American runabout, starting with a visit to two of the yards in New York state
with great names above their doors: Gar Wood and Hacker. He followed this up by travelling west to Nevada to visit the Lake Tahoe
Concours d’Elegance, America’s Pebble Beach for powerboats, celebrating half a century this year. The American runabout (typically
a planing, mahogany day boat with an inboard engine), became one of the most recognisable, copied and produced boats of the 20th
century and they are still building them today. Another of those places is St-Tropez in October. It wasn’t just the sun we were chasing:
ex-CB editor Dan Houston sailed aboard what must count as one of the most notable restorations of the age, to the S&S yawl Baruna.

In terms of long-standing projects by young boatbuilders, Arabella was recently
launched and we hope to bring you the story in 2024. She's a new Colin Archer type
ketch of nearly 40ft (essentially a bigger Suhaili) built on a farm in Massachusetts from
timber felled there by the yacht’s owner and lead shipwright Steve Denette. Another
story we will bring this year is that of Ash Faire-Ring of Norfolk, who launched his
half-sized 1920s Thames barge yacht Growler, after performing rather more surgery on
it than he was expecting when he bought her just a few years ago at the age of 17! The
big one, of course, is the 1910 Albert Strange yacht Tally Ho which, due to its incredible
documentation on YouTube can probably lay claim to being the most talked-about
yacht restoration of all time. Owner Leo Goolden has not made any statement about
when she will be launched (sensible man), but she’s out of the shed and the mast has
been stepped, so we’re guessing 2024 might be the year.

Boats from living memory

The other big change at the British Classic Yacht Clulb
(see above) is the invitation of glassfibre yachts to the
event. This echoes a broader movement internationally,
which has been echoed in the pages of Classic Boat of
late. The restored early 1970s Nicholson 55 Quailo III,
which was our lead band cover bat back in May,
together with a column advocating respect for old glass
(not ‘plastic’, please!) provoked more letters than
anything in recent memory. It was around the same time
that the CIM allowed glass boats to race, something that
was in evidence immediately after it was implemented,
with two early 1970s One-Ton class yachts racing in the
new class that summer. These, coupled with the 12s and
Maxis at the America’s Cup, and an increase in the
number of serious restorations to old glassfibre boats,
spell a bright future for modern classics whose origins
are still in living memory.

MERIVA

Kim Holman yacht

Here’s a pretty classic with quite a modern shape for a boat built in carvel (pitch pine and mahogany on Canadian rock elm). She’s by Kim
Holman and built by one of his favourite yards, Tucker Brown, in 1967, with a fin-and-skeg underbody and retroussé counter stern. Somehow,
that stern looks quite in keeping with this pretty classic. The high freeboard and decent beam give plenty of accommodation (nine berths over
the yacht’s 43ft) while the rig is a simple bermudan sloop on an alloy mast and boom. Her current owners gave her a three-year refit ending in
2012, producing a well-found boat capable of being crewed by two for long, comfortable passages, including transats. The 40hp Yanmar (2012)
was removed, serviced, repainted and reinstalled in 2022. Here’s a great choice for a couple to cruise from regatta to regatta. “From one of the
UK’s finest naval architects, a cruiser racer from the pinnacle of wooden yacht design and build. Fast, powerful and elegant,” says her broker.

Lying Cornwall, Asking £125,000, woodenships.co.uk

PEGASUS

Pilot cutter
Built for The Island Trust in 2008 to a design by the
esteemed Ed Burnett, Pegasus has served to take
young people to sea for 15 years. Unlike some
ex-sail-training vessels, the 56ft Pegasus is a pilot
cutter, with the yacht-like qualities – good
performance, ease of handling and a more ‘yachty’
appearance – that make her just as suited to private
ownership. She’s now sadly for sale, along with their
other boat Moosk, due to financial issues. “She’s of
superb build quality, coded to MCA Cat 2,” says broker
Richard Gregson. Pegasus offers 12 berths in four
cabins with good headroom throughout and generous
living areas. Equipment is thorough and good, with
the most important sails being five years old or newer.
She’s been kept well to adhere to code and the 135hp
John Deere diesel (2008) was overhauled in
2020. “Ideal for someone looking to go on a high-
latitude sailing adventure perhaps?” wonders Richard.

“Amazing product. I purchased
the small repair kit to restore the
base of a load bearing strut which
supports a small gable window
that had partially rotted. Customer
support is second to none, even on
a Sunday. Repair is as good as the original and the product is well
worth the money as the only alternative was to remove the base &
splice in a new piece which would have been difficult and expensive.”

THOMASTON, MAINE

A job from outer space

Lyman Morse boatbuilders were recently contacted by Maine-based Western
Marine Steel with an enquiry that was out of this world. They had a three-tonne
meteorite discovered in Siberia and needed help determining how best to build a
base to support it. Their client, the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum, wanted to
put the meteorite on display, alongside some their other impressive collection of
meteorites and rare minerals. Lyman Morse used a 3-D laser scanner to scan all
faces of the meteor, then used a 3-D printer to produce a 1:10 scale model. This
helped to determine the best way a support system would work. The initial plan
had been to build the display stand at a certain angle, but thanks to the scale
model, a better angle was found, one that would allow the museum to highlight
more of the meteorite’s interesting facets. The meteorite and stand are scheduled
to be on display at the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum by the end of 2023, after
a short, temporary exhibition at the Rockefeller Center in New York City.

BROOKLIN, MAINE

Fixing a 100+ year-old Winter Harbor

Earlier this year, the Winter Harbor Knockabout Zephyr
was re-launched after some painstaking work to her
hull to make her watertight again, by the shipwrights
at Brooklin Boatyard. This fleet, also known as the
Winter Harbor 21s, is believed to be the oldest
complete fleet of one-designs in the USA. They spend
their summers together racing along the Schoodic
Peninsula at the Winter Harbor Yacht Club in Winter
Harbor, Maine. Zephyr, owned by Tom Kirchoff, came
to Brooklin Boatyard, as she was leaking badly.
Boatbuilder Haddie Hawkins explained the “setting the
cotton” process he used to pinpoint problem areas.
“We have to gently tap the caulking iron in all of the
plank seams. If there’s no resistance, then you know
there’s a leak there.” What he found was some
compromised plank seams in the cotton caulking.
Through further investigation in the forefoot of the
stem to keel joint and garboard seam, he found some
rotted areas that required thoughtful removal and
replacement of wood throughout the intersection of
the stem to keel joint, frames, and plank hood ends.
Haddie has grown fond of Zephyr during his time
caring for her. “This boat is phenomenally strong, and
she’s really old. Just a fascinating shape. I love to
consider what they were thinking when they made her
that way.” The Knockabouts were designed and built
by Alpheus A Packard (1871-1948) and William Starling
Burgess (1878-1947) of Marblehead in 1906. They were
delivered to the yacht club in 1907.

Letters
LETTER OF THE MONTH SUPPORTED BY OLD PULTENEY WHISKY

Jorvik on the Ouse – whisky winner

I very much enjoyed your article on the restoration
of the motor yacht Jorvik. Not too long after her
launch I was starting to learn to sail on the river
Ouse, initially in a canoe and small pram dinghy and
later graduating to crewing in National 12s at the
Yorkshire Ouse Sailing Club at Naburn. Jorvik
(christened from the Viking name for the city of
York), was a familiar site with her ‘naval profile’,
weaving among the National 12s and Fireflies. I
would however like to correct some inaccuracies;
Jorvik was never kept in Naburn Marina (actually
called York Marina) as it was not constructed until
many years later; also there was no such club as The
Naburn Yacht Club. Mr Ingle was, in fact commodore
of the York Motor Boat Club and Jorvik was kept on
the club’s moorings at Fulford, a district of York.
The last time I saw Jorvik was in 2018 in Hull Marina
and she looked to be superficially in good order;
appearances were obviously deceptive!
Chris Potter, Otley

It’s not Moitessier’s – it’s mine!

I was delighted to see my beloved Feo pictured in the May ‘23 issue of Classic
Boat – a Joshua ketch I bought in San Francisco in 1985, sailed solo to Hawaii
and back twice (one leg in 1993 with my elder daughter Emily, then just 13 and
aboard as first mate); and campaigned with friends and family in three Newport-
Bermuda races (2002, 2012 and 2018). Included this shot you used of her in 2018
when my youngest daughter Izze (at the helm here, with crew Claudio Van Duijn
beside her and me leaning on the mizzen) became the youngest skipper in that
race’s history.
I believe that about 90 Joshua ketches were built in the wake of Moitessier’s
historic performance, and have been told that fewer than 10 exist today. Feo now
lives in Maine’s Penobscot Bay and can often be seen on her mooring in Bucks
Harbor or in Frenchboro Harbor, where I now live. I hope some of your readers
may look up Into My Father’s Wake, which as a journalist then, I wrote about my
first solo San Francisco-to-Hawaii round trip and some of the family and
personal issues that solo sailing can help one to address amid the beauties and
challenges of the ocean. Thank you for your great coverage of this great sport
and the classics that keep on giving!

Eric Best, Frenchboro, Maine, ericbestwriter.com

Jorvik now
What a fantastic article on my boat Jorvik in last month’s
issue. Sandy Miller is a miracle worker! My daughter recently
married in London so you can imagine the chaos! My
brother in law brought a copy with him and the combination
was all quite emotional…
Matthew Ingle, Jorvik

THE FIRST CB AWARD…

Not 30 years ago, but in our March 2007 issue, there was a small item on
page five, as part of the round-up we did on the big feature stand we held at
the London Boat Show in Excel. One small photo shows Giuseppe Longo,
project manager behind the restoration of the great yacht Lulworth, holding
what looks like a crystal decanter, inscribed with the words “Classic Boat
Restoration of the Year.” And that, really, was that. We started what we now
call Classic Boat Awards as a single restoration prize, and only because of the
stir that Lulworth had caused at the time. She was, probably still is, the world’s
largest gaff cutter-rigged yacht, at an almost implausible 122ft (37.2m) LOD, built
in 1920 by the White Brothers in Southampton to a 23-M design by Herbert
White. She was fast, winning a record 13 races our of 29 starts in 1926, and
dangerous too, claiming the lives of at least two crewmen before she retired
from racing with the advent of the J Class in 1930. When we sailed her in 2006,
she had no trouble hitting 12 knots. Her restoration was covered in the September
2006 issue over 21 pages, which was, and remains, a record for a single feature in CB. Now, of
course, CB Awards has grown into many categories – and we make more of a song and dance
about it. Don’t miss your chance to vote when our February issue comes out with the shortlist.

Named after one of the brightest of stars, the William Fife III schooner ALTAIR’s near mythical status in the classic yacht world is all for very good reason - this yacht
has become the standard-bearer for the cause of authenticity since her landmark restoration in 1987. While important as the yacht that started what has become the
classic yacht revival, that role is as nothing to her own status at the top of this hierarchy. ALTAIR is the ultimate vintage yacht – and surely one of the world’s most
