When Jeff Bezos and ex-wife MacKenzie Scott announced their split, we wouldn’t have blamed them for wanting to play the field after 26 years of marriage. But to everyone’s surprise, Bezos quickly settled down again with the striking Lauren Sánchez. So who exactly is she and how did she end up dating one of the richest men in the world?

As a result of her new beau Bezos – Amazon founder and the world’s second-richest man with a net worth of US$198 billion – Sánchez, 51 suddenly found her private life thrust into the spotlight. Their whirlwind romance reportedly started with a fling back in January 2018 while Bezos, 57, was still married to Scott.

In a scandalous splash in The National Enquirer, the tabloid declared that the pair had begun seeing each other in secret before Bezos and MacKenzie had separated. In fact, The Enquirer said it had tracked the couple “across five states and 40,000 miles, tailed them in private jets, swanky limos, helicopter rides, romantic hikes, five-star hotel hideaways, intimate dinner dates and ‘quality time’ in hidden love nests”.

However by July 2019, the lovers had left all shyness behind. They openly declared their union first as a couple at Wimbledon tennis tournament that summer, and then relaxing on a luxury yacht off the Caribbean island of St. Barts. As might be expected of her wealthy boyfriend, Bezos then threw her a lavish 50th birthday bash, inviting famous guests like Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom and Timothée Chalamet.

More recently, Sánchez was seen right beside Bezos as he realised one of his biggest dreams – the launch of Blue Origin’s NS-18. She took to Instagram to congratulate her man on the historic moment back in October. Sánchez wrote, “Boots on the ground in Texas for @blueorigin launch. Can’t wait!” Three days later, she shared another image of them watching the wonder of Blue Origin unfold in front of their eyes.

She posted, “This launch was just as intense as when Jeff went up in space, but for a different reason. We got to stand and bond with the families as they watched their loved ones experience the boundaries of our planet in an entirely new way. It was a powerful moment in itself to just hold their hands and feel all the love. This is how it starts.”

A glamorous life is something of a given when you’re the partner of one of the world’s richest humans. Indeed the world is your oyster, and holidays that begin with a stroll through Saint-Tropez and end with a cruise off the coast of Spain are all par for the course.

The very much in love couple were spotted enjoying a European escapade aboard media mogul David Geffen’s superyacht the Rising Sun in November 2019. Then a month later, the couple jetted off to French-speaking Caribbean island and renowned celebrity retreat St. Barts, doing more of what seems to be their favourite activity: relaxing on yachts. They made it a family holiday as Sánchez’s son, Nikko Gonzalez, also joined them.

Early this year, right after stepping down as Amazon’s CEO – in what has been described as the “richest retirement ever” – Bezos took to the seas once more on a luxury holiday in Cabo with Sánchez. But no matter where they travel, they can always return to their US$165 million love nest on a sprawling nine-acre (3.6-hectare) estate in Beverly Hills. The vast 13,600 sq ft Georgian-style Warner mansion set a record as the most expensive home sale in the state’s history.

In an Instagram post on November 25, Sánchez shared a few previously unseen photos of her spending quality time with the American billionaire. She captioned it, “Mi Lugar favorito del mundo, es a tu lado,” which means, “My favourite place in the world is by your side.”

And that’s not all. The couple also recently bought a tropical estate on La Perouse Bay on the island of Maui reported to be worth a whopping US$78 million. Spanning 14 acres, the home is incredibly isolated and is said to have a 4,500 sq ft main house with an open kitchen and spellbinding ocean views. The icing on the cake is a massive 700 sq ft, perfectly circular swimming pool.

What the future holds for the couple is unclear, but Sánchez sporting a huge yellow, heart-shaped ring while running errands in Los Angeles immediately sparked engagement rumours. Might the Amazon boss Bezos already have popped the question?

Upon his return to earth after going into space on Blue Origin, the evidently besotted Bezos hugged Sánchez as soon as his feet were safely on the ground.

In a press conference afterward, Bezos said the moment he was reunited with family and friends after the trip made him realise how much he loved them “and how much I’m loved”.

Sometimes love also makes you threaten Leonardo DiCaprio too. Just saying!
