A beautiful, solitary dwarf cactus that forms a stout stem which is well armed with very ornamental white to pink to reddish brown spines and large, pink flowers. The spines can have different colors each year, giving the stem a banded appearance (hence the name Rainbow Cactus). It is native from southeastern Arizona to southwestern New Mexico and northern Mexico between 1200 and 2000 m. In cultivation it must have a sunny aspect and perfectly draining soil.
