ORKHON Valley

- By B.DULGUUN

Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape sprawls along the banks of Orkhon River in central Mongolia, some 320 km west from Ulaanbaatar. The hills and valleys of this breathtaking area are a must see. Tourists who’ve been to the site highly recommend that you pay extra for a land cruiser or at least an all-wheel drive vehicle to get around the tight spots and cross rivers. The waterfall visit is another must see site.

The 121,967-hectare Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape, listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List, encompasses an extensive area of pastureland on both banks of Orkhon River and includes numerous archaeological remains dating back to the 6th century. The site also includes Kharkhorin, the 13th to 14th century capital of Chinggis Khaan’s vast empire.

Collectively the remains at the site reflect the symbiotic links between nomadic, pastoral societies and their administrative and religious centers, and the importance of Orkhon Valley in the history of central Asia. The grassland is still grazed by Mongolian nomadic pastoralists.

As it is an extension of the visit to Kharkhorin, it is perfect for an adventure of a drive and great views. Take a good camera for memorable photos!
