Statue

This is a statue of Ashikaga Takauji which stands in Ashikaga city, Tochigi prefecture. Ashikaga Takauji (1305-1358) was the first Shogun of the Muromachi shogunate. He fought well in toppling the Kamakura shogunate and continued to defeat his major opponents. Since then, 15 generations of Ashikagas served as Shogun to establish a stable Muromachi shogunate. This photo shows Takauji in a formal court attire called "Ikan Sokutai."
