Pair of chairs by Josef Hoffmann, model 511 edited by Thonet in 1904. The structure is made of solid stained beech. The seat is made of molded plywood. The three wands of the file are turned elements. Three perforated holes on the upper headband echo them.

    Inspiration: This chair with clean lines, typical of the Viennese style of the early twentieth century, was designed by Joseph Hoffmann and manufactured by Thonet Gebrüder. The taut line of the upright starting from the front foot extends until it forms the backrest, a technique characteristic of the Art Nouveau style. Sold in American sales catalogs, this luxury chair furnished, among other things, reception rooms around the world.

    Designer: Viennese architect and designer Josef Hoffmann (1870 – 1956) will mark the history of design with his modernist creations, in opposition to the traditional styles of the past. He draws geometric, rectilinear and refined shapes inspired by cubism. Josef Hoffmann always favors beautiful, utilitarian and functional furniture. In order to mass-produce high-quality household objects,He founded the Wiener Werkstätte, a concept of craft workshops inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement.

    Editor: Thonet is a German furniture manufacturer created in the nineteenth century by Michael Thonet, known worldwide for its curved wooden bistro chairs, the most emblematic of which is the bistro chair No. 14 from 1859. An international success due to an innovative marketing strategy, offering the general public robust and mass-produced furniture at low cost. After the First World War, Thonet surrounded himself with the most prominent designers of the moment: Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand… and produces modernist furniture in the Bauhaus style, characterized by an arched tubular steel structure and cantilevered or sled bases.
