"Tsugihagi" is a Japanese word that refers to a patchwork or pieced-together style of fabric or clothing. Tsugihagi can be seen in various forms of traditional Japanese clothing such as "Boro" which incorporate patches of different fabrics and colors into a single garment. This style of patchwork was born out of necessity in rural Japan, where fabrics were scarce and people would often mend their clothes by piecing and sewing together scraps of cloth. The idea of Tsugihagi is often associated with the concept of "Wabi-Sabi," which values the beauty found in imperfection. Seeking to recreate the beautiful and intricate patchwork patterns seen in the past, Studio D’Artisan has created their latest “Tsugihagi Sashiko” collection by developing a proprietary jacquard weave to mimic the imperfect stitched paneling featured in traditional garments. Featuring two different hues of Indigo and several complex stitching patterns, the resulting fabric gives off a truly three-dimensional feel to each garment in the "Tsugihagi Sashiko" collection.
