Four firms have been awarded multi-billion-pound contracts to support the decomissioning programme at Sellafield.
Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, Kellog Brown & Root, Wood and Doosan Babcock have all won roles on the Programme and Project Partner model.
The partnership is divided into four lots with Kellogg Brown & Root named as integration partner, Wood awarded the design and engineering partner contract. The civils construction contract went to Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, and Doosan Babcock Ltd won the process construction partnership.
This new approach to the site has been set up to support faster, more effective project delivery, stability in design and construction supply chains, greater workforce flexibility, and local economic benefit.
The Sellafield site covers the former Windscale and Calder Hill Nuclear sites, which were commissioned in 1956 under the former Ministry of Supply. The sites were taken over in 2005 by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Sellafield.
Overuse of the power stations during miners strikes in the 1970s and rushed nuclear weapons programmes led to improper disposal of radioactive material on the site.
Sellafield Ltd chief executive Paul Foster said the aim was to bring experts closer to the project to increase safety for all. “The award of the PPP contracts marks the start of a new, and very different, journey for Sellafield Ltd and our supply chain partners.
“Our number one priority is making Sellafield safer, sooner, and a key part of this is establishing closer relationships with other expert organisations,” he said.
“Working side by side with our four long-term partners, as one team, will help transform the way we deliver projects safely, quickly, and cost effectively.”
The long term nature of the contract will also allow the industry to develop and grow its skill base for the massive decommissioning project.
