Heinrich Schliemann, German archaeologist

Heinrich Schliemann (1822-1890), German archaeologist and discoverer of the ruins of the legendary city of Troy. After finishing his formal education at 14, Schliemann went into business and made his fortune. In 1863 he retired and devoted himself to finding the truth behind the ancient Greek legends, particularly the account of the Trojan War in Homers Iliad. In 1870, Schliemann discovered ruins at Hissarlik, in Turkey, that he attributed to Homeric Troy, though it is now said that he discovered an earlier Troy. He later excavated the ruins of Mycenae, Ithaca, Orchomenus, and Tiryns. Portrait photographed in Russia in 1996

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned German archaeologist, Heinrich Schliemann (1822-1890), who dedicated his life to unraveling the mysteries of ancient Greek legends. Born in Germany, Schliemann's insatiable curiosity led him on a remarkable journey that would forever change our understanding of history. Having amassed great wealth through business ventures, Schliemann retired in 1863 and embarked on a quest to uncover the truth behind Homer's epic tale, the Trojan War. In 1870, he made an extraordinary discovery at Hissarlik in Turkey, which he believed to be Homeric Troy. Although subsequent research suggests it was an earlier version of Troy, this finding marked a pivotal moment in archaeological exploration. Driven by his passion for antiquity, Schliemann continued excavating various sites including Mycenae, Ithaca, Orchomenus, and Tiryns. His relentless pursuit not only unearthed invaluable artifacts but also shed light on ancient civilizations that had long been shrouded in myth and legend. Captured here is a portrait of Heinrich Schliemann during his visit to Russia in 1996. The intensity emanating from his eyes reflects both his determination and reverence for historical knowledge. This image serves as a testament to the indomitable spirit of human inquiry and reminds us of the profound impact one individual can have on shaping our understanding of the past.
