Check out one of the most iconic monuments in Prague dating back to the 11th century which separates Old Town and New Town Prague.

The Powder Tower in Prague was built in 1475. These days, the tower is used as a gate between the Old Town and the New Town. But the tower’s history goes back even further to the 11th century when this gate was initially used as 1 of 13 gates between the Old and the New Town of Prague.

The name of the Powder Tower is quite fitting since it was used as a gunpowder storage facility back in the day. Nowadays, the Powder Tower is used as a meetup spot for walking tours.

Since the Powder Tower splits up Old Town and New Town around Prague Castle. Kings of the past decided this was the perfect starting point for the Royal Path up the Prague Castle. This is the most famous walking route in the city - one we recommend taking after you’ve explored the inside of the tower.

Inside the tower, you can find an observation gallery. Inside the gallery, you can see photos of how the tower has changed over the centuries and all the reconstruction that has happened to it. It truly is one of Prague’s most iconic monuments and it plays an important part in the Bohemian history of Prague.

  • Once you meet up at the Powder Tower Gate buy a ticket and climb up the 186 stone steps to the observation gallery.
  • The Powder Tower Gate was 1 of 13 gates that citizens could use to enter from New Town Prague into Old Town and was initially used back in the 11th century!
  • The entrance itself is easy to overlook. You wouldn’t think it’s possible to enter the tower and explore it but make sure to look for the little door. From inside you’ll have views of Old and New Town Prague.
