HH Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, Patriarch of Antioch and all the East, the Supreme Head of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church and the accompanying delegation visits Guatemala in Central America and consecrates a cathedral and three bishops amongst other activities.[1]
His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, Patriarch of Antioch and all the East, the Supreme Head of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church with the accompanying delegation arrived at Guatemala on 28th February 2024, in an apostolic visit to consecrate the Archdiocesan Cathedral and three bishops.
HH and the accompanying delegation were received by HE Mor Yacoub Eduardo, Archbishop of Central America, joined by the Syrian Orthodox clergy and seminarians in Guatemala.
HH held several meetings on the 29th of February 2024, with the seminarians of the Archdiocese of Central America, followed by a meeting with some of the priests and other clergy. The meetings were held at the Archdiocesan center in Guatemala.
These meetings were held prior to HH Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II consecrated St. Mary Cathedral in Guatemala City.
On March 1st, 2024, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II celebrated the Holy Qurobo on the altar of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Guatemala.
During the Divine Liturgy (Holy Qurobo), HH consecrated V. Rev. Raban Marcos Manuel Caisedo Tenorio, Bishop of Western Guatemala, and V. Rev. Raban Andres Orlando Lopez Hernandes, Bishop of Central Guatemala, and Raban Wilfredo Jose Hortado Roez, Bishop of Northern Guatemala. HH was assisted by the archbishops of the accompanying delegation.
On March 2, 2024, HH Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II presided over the Divine Liturgy (Holy Qurobo) celebrated by H.E. Mor Yacoub Eduardo, Archbishop of Central America, and their Graces Bishops: Mor Marcos Manuel Caisedo, Bishop of Western Guatemala, Mor Andres Orlando Lopez, Bishop of Central Guatemala, and Mor Jose Wilfredo Hortado, Bishop of Northern Guatemala, at St. John the Baptist Cathedral in Comalapa. During the Holy Qurobo, HH celebrated the service of installation of the new bishop Mor Andres Orlando Lopez in the Diocese of Central Guatemala within the Archdiocese of Central America.
On March 3rd, 2024, HH met the Founding Board of the Syriac Orthodox University of Guatemala, at the Archdiocesan Centre in Guatemala.
It is worthwhile to note here that HH and despite the uncertainties in the Middle East, and on 8th September 2018 declared the opening of the University of Antioch of Ma’arat Seydnaya – the opening and running of universities continues at the Syriac Orthodox Church which is an old tradition whereas and as it was written in the piece of news by the WCC on 13th September 2018 [1] published on the WCC website from which we quote:
“In the year 363, when Nisbis fell to the Persians, St Ephraim the Syrian, with some teachers from the Nisbis school, left and headed to Edessa. The city of Edessa was the home of a school established in the 2nd century by the kings of the Abgar Dynasty. When St Ephraim took over the school in Edessa, its importance grew immensely. Further, St Ephraim established the laws and canons that would be the base on which other universities have been established around the world.”
It was pleasing to see the events unfolding in Guatemala, congratulating the archdiocese on the new cathedral, the new three bishops, and wishing the founding committee of the Syriac University in Guatemala all the very best. May God bless.
