𝟓 𝐁𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐈'𝐝 𝐓𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐌𝐲 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 (𝐋𝐚𝐰𝐲𝐞𝐫) 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟:   𝟏. 𝐑𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐃𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: Work very hard and learn relentlessly. Each day, aim to acquire new legal insights or skills: read a new case, read a chapter of a practitioner’s text, watch a trial, analyse a submission, or attend a CPD course, on top of your daily tasks.  There should be multiple deadlines daily and you should move cases fast – don’t get into a habit of asking for extensions and vacating dates. I know of lawyers who could not complete one whole case in their 3 years with a firm whilst others have 3-4 full trials under their belt by then.   𝟐. 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Prioritize mastering the basics— For the civil practitioners: pleadings, simple applications (JID, Summary Judgement, Discovery, Injunctions), debt recovery, magistrates/sessions court trials. For the criminal practitioners: remand hearings, bail applications, accompanying clients to police stations, minor offences. Lay a solid groundwork before chasing after high-profile/appellate court/landmark/“sexy” cases. Your participation in those cases is limited, contribution even less. Building substance is more important than looking glamorous on Linkedin; earn your stripes.   𝟑. 𝐂𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: Value is earned, not bestowed, and mastery demands relentless dedication. Embrace the mindset of a craftsman or a sportsman, where you accept longer hours mean better skills; you simply cannot become good at legal practice if you treat it like a job where you clock in at 9 and leave sharp at 5, only on weekdays no less. You can have "work-life balance", but just know you’re paying the price (of excellence and success) for it.   𝟒. 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: Regardless of what some may say, what sustains a legal practice is clients and revenue. So, whether for your firm or for the firm you work for, you need to be able to attract clients and new briefs (to sustain the former or be promoted to partnership in the latter). And everybody does something to gain visibility a.k.a marketing, it is just the method that differs. Some spend time with clients personally, some give talks at conferences, some write articles, and some participate in Bar events & committees (I benefitted from this as I do quite a bit of counsel work for other lawyers now on employment law). Ofcourse, do good work after you actually get the work.     𝟓. 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲: Trust in your journey, relax, the money will come. Become actually good or useful at something, and your fees/salary will reflect your value. If not, you can always leave and seek greener pastures. It is only when you offer no value or skill that you are trapped; don't become those who do not self-introspect but just keep whining, about macroeconomics, about exploitative bosses, about others undercutting fees yada yada. Stop wasting time & stay focused.

𝐄𝐧𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐭 Since the amendment to the Employment Act ("EA") that came into force in 2023, the EA now covers all employees (except a few provisions that do not apply to employees with wages above RM4000*) and is no longer only applicable to employees with wages below RM2000*. That, together with the deletion of Section 69B, meant that now generally all employees (and employers) can make a complaint to the Director General of Labour and have it inquired under Section 69 of the EA regarding their labour disputes such as on unpaid wages, unpaid salary in lieu of notice, unpaid overtime, any other unpaid payments in cash as provided in the employee's contract of service, and more. In short, now (generally) all employees can file a claim in the Labour Court for their labour disputes. This was not previously possible as the EA only covers employees with wages below RM2000*, and consequently, many labour disputes cannot be heard by the Labour Court, and have to be pursued through the Civil Court, which is slower, more costly, more tedious, and has stricter procedural rules. So employees and employers now have easier access to a tribunal that can resolve their disputes, and one may say, have easier access to justice.
