For several years, Annalisa King has been the National Academic Director for a course at the Institute of Corporate Directors entitled Board Oversight of Strategy. Developed in partnership with CPA Canada, based on CPA Canada’s Overseeing Strategy: A Framework for Boards of Directors, this course helps directors constructively engage in the strategic oversight process. Coming out of the pandemic in recognition of the immense change companies were experiencing, Annalisa added a module to the course entitled, “The intersection of strategy and risk”. The intention of this module is to explore what has changed in strategy development and conversations in recent times, with these times being aptly described as the age of volatility. With threats such as climate, geo-political, intense disintermediation and change, companies need to assess their strategy in a different way, more frequently, and with a view to what is resilient and existential, more now than ever before. BOARD OF DIRECTORS IN SWISS COMPANIES: A (R)EVOLUTION IS NECESSARY This week took place a Board of Directors related event in the late afternoon in Zurich: very strong participation. And as Dominic Lüthi mentionned, the Board of Directors are essentially organized with family and friends (more than 90%). The question of the independence is immediately raised: it seems not that important as the companies are often family owned but... there is a huge new generation issue. The new CEOs can for sure not always come from the own family. Moreover, the mix of competences is more and more at risk because... of the new risks but not only. A fresh perspective shall be very welcome. Another aspect that clearly is visible now: a board member with practical risk management expertise is more adapted than one that is hyper-specialized (such as cyber-risk). I've been board member of the CMT Association, a non-for-profit US expert-educational organisation in the US - in the field of technical analysis (finance)
