Scattered rain returns Wednesday

After brutal weekend heat, small rain chances return to help alleviate the heat.

AUSTIN, Texas — Central Texas has experienced above-average temperatures with below-average rainfall for most of August. But the area might get a little relief. For the start of September, we're tracking small rain chances

Camp Mabry has reported 1.25 inches of rain since the beginning of the month of August, which is 1 inch below average for the month. Since June 1, Camp Mabry has only recorded 4.57 inches of rain, putting the area at a 3.99-inch rain deficit.

An upper-level trough is expected to dig into Texas by mid-week. This will help provide slightly higher rain chances for the second half of the week. The increase in cloud cover and potential rain could help drop the area's temperatures by a few degrees.

The first round arrives Wednesday as a cluster of storms moves in. Some storms could have gusty winds and heavy rain, especially across the Hill Country.

Wednesday through Friday will feature daily 40 to 60% rain chances, with the highest coverage of rain and storms likely across the Hill Country, where upwards of 3 inches of rain is possible in the next seven days.

Highs are currently expected to fall into the mid 90s by Friday and next weekend.
