Run from Davis to Sacramento honors slain police officers
Dozens of first responders from Sacramento and Davis ran in memory of Officer Natalie Corona and Officer Tara O'Sullivan.
The 30-mile run with six legs kicked off at the Davis Police Department on Wednesday morning and headed to the Sacramento Police Academy in Sacramento, where both Corona and O'Sullivan graduated from.
The run was the brainchild of an emergency room nurse at the UC Davis Medical Center who treated the officers.
Corona lost her life in the line of duty in January, and it was just last month that O'Sullivan was shot and killed responding to a domestic disturbance at a home.
Those involved said the race was a way to show that first responders are more united than ever and not deterred from keeping the public safe.
One runner, who is a Sacramento State student and training to be an officer, said O'Sullivan inspired her to get into law enforcement.
"We are a tight-knit community, and we do care about each other," said Tamara Thompson. "I hope this shows that there are positive people out there."
Corona was 22 when she died, and O'Sullivan was 26.
The run started at 6:22 a.m., representing Corona's age. It ended at 12:26 p.m. in honor of O'Sullivan's age.
