It’s been almost two years since Hilary Duff split from her husband, Canadian NHL player Mike Comrie, and a lot has changed since then — including Duff’s views on marriage and motherhood, and a plum new role on TV Land’s hit show Younger.

“It’s hard to say you can really have it all,” says Duff in a February cover story with Redbook, out January 5. “I think you can to a certain degree, but fully loaded, pedal-all-the-way-down is tough. You’re missing out on something, either on the career or on the family,” adds the 28-year-old, who shares custody of son Luca Cruz, 3, with Comrie. “When I’m really busy with work, I feel extremely guilty.”
While motherhood has its perks, it’s also forced Duff even further into the spotlight in some instances. “After I had Luca, I went out to, like, the breast-pump store — I was still huge — and I just had a comfortable outfit on. And the next day [in the tabloids] it was like, ‘Hilary debuts post-baby bod!’ And I was like, ‘That’s not a debut! That’s an errand!’ It was such a happy time that honestly I didn’t care; it wasn’t until later that I realized how mean and invasive it was.”

And it’s not just motherhood that Duff has gained a fresh perspective on as of late. In the interview, the singer and actress also discusses her views on marriage, too. “I don’t want to say I wouldn’t get married again, but its not important to me,” says the former Lizzie McGuire star, who briefly tested out the waters of online dating when she signed up for Tinder earlier this year. “I don’t feel I would need to be married to have another child. If I felt strongly enough toward someone, or if someone felt strongly about it, I might say okay. But it’s not essential.”
