Between beach days and weekend trips, no one has the time—or temperature control—to blow-dry their hair in the summer. Fortunately, lazy hot girl hair is now trending, so we can put our dryers away until autumn.

Coined by L’Oréal Professionnel global ambassador Min Kim, lazy hot girl hair describes a look that’s equal parts chic, edgy, and low-maintenance, and can be achieved with air-drying, overnight braids, or hot tools (assuming you have amazing AC). This laid-back look is the ultimate style to wear in warm weather.

“Lazy hot girl hair is trending as a variation of the mermaid waves that are still going strong, but with a cooler, more laid-back messiness that’s also super sultry and sexy,” Min tells Glamour. “This look is about embracing the perfectly imperfect, which makes it suitable for hotter humid days when hair can be more difficult to tame, especially if your hair has some kind of wave or movement to it.”

It’s no wonder so many celebrities and characters on TV have been rocking the look. “If you’ve watched The Idol, picture what the dancers’ hair looked like after they were done with a sweaty routine, or Carrie’s hair in And Just Like That…. They served some lazy hot girl hair moments,” Min says. “And let’s not forget all the iconic lazy hot girl hair moments being served on concert tours this summer, like Beyoncé.”

Celebrity hairstylist Marc Mena agrees, and cites lazy hot girl hair as the latest iteration of a runway-inspired “undone” look. “In all the fashion shows, and as long as history goes, it’s always been that slept-in, rock-and-roll hair,” he says. “To me, it’s referencing Kate Moss.”

As for how to DIY lazy hot girl hair? It depends on just how lazy you’re feeling. “A lot of clients now are asking for hair extensions with waves or loose curls, and I recommend letting hair air-dry and using leave-in conditioner,” says celebrity extentionist Priscilla Valles, whose clients include Kim Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian, and Kylie Jenner.

“To help create the waves, I also have them to do four pigtails with their hair, two on the top, two on the bottom, then sleep on it, and let the waves loose in the morning,” Valles continues, adding that you can also braid your hair at night. Just be sure to protect it with leave-in conditioner.

“The ultimate product for air-dried hair is the L’Oréal Professionnel Vitamino Color 10-in-1 Spray. Mist it throughout towel-dried lengths,” says Kim. “If your hair is fine and needs a little extra boost (volume), you can add a mousse or the Transformer Lotion to the roots and quickly blast them with the hair dryer before you go about your business.”

If you prefer something a little more styled than you’d get with air-drying, Kim also loves styling the look as a combination of air-dried hair and textures via pulled curls, as well as rock-and-roll waves.

“These are a variation of a ripple waves created by rocking the L’Oréal Professionnel Steampod down the lengths of hair,” Min says; just be sure to use heat protectant (Kim suggests Fluidifier Heat Protectant) and something hydrating on the ends. “The final step is to zhuzh hair when dry and spray Next Day Hair throughout for more volume and texture,” she says.

You can also use a curling iron to create the look. “When styling lazy hot girl hair, I always want to smooth out the front of the hairline,” Mena says. “Then, just pick up random pieces with, you can use multiple sizes of curing iron, from 1.25 inch to a 1 inch. Anything smaller than that would be too tight.”

From there, pick up different pieces of hair, wrapping the iron in different directions so nothing is blending. “The thing that really is the star of this style is a dry or texture spray,” Mena says, adding that his go-to is always Oribe’s Dry Texturising Spray.

“Lastly, add a little bit of an oil at the end of the hair, just so the hair doesn’t look dry,” Mena says. “You still want it to have a shine and look like it’s healthy.”
