it's commonly known as a june beetle, we have tons of them in Nc during the summer
I have often see them, smaller than them too.

Heh lets see you find one of those harder to get scarab beetles, those are around, usually in the summer you can find them, there much much larger then that guy, about the size of a half dollar coin.
Scarab beetle larva are huge! If you ever seen one its like 2 inches in diameter and like 5 inches long.
Of course i live in northern Ohio.. not sure the area where you are at for those type of beetles, they look kinda like the annoying Japanese beetles that live around here in the summer, annoying eat everything.
the japanese beetles are the smaller ones, about the size of a dime, and they'll eat flowers and vegies, but if you have some good orb weaver spiders, they usually take care of the japanese bettles
