I have a bottle of the Unilever version. It smells very pleasant. 1881 kind of reminds me of Lauder for Men, but I prefer 1881.

SweetPeaPea

Puts hair on your chest. Nice presentation with the frosted bottle and a beastly sprayer. It's in the vein of the 70's and 80's style juices while remaining fresh, youthful and updated. Nothing off putting here. Reminds me of the way I felt when I wore an early 90's formulation of Stetson to a school dance in the sixth grade. Makes me feel like a man.

Will in DC

Classic and restrained, a slightly greener woodier cousin of Boucheron with more noticeable florals. This could have been great. However, it's overpriced, has poor longevity, and the cassia note is unpleasant. Boucheron is about 30% less expensive at discounters and superior in performance and refinement. Shame, because I like slightly greener takes on this style, and this could have been outstanding if it were stronger and dropped the cassia. Don't get me wrong, it's not excessively pissy, the cassia doesn't overpower you, but it's noticeable and to me is unnecessary.

BigBearHK

Comfortable classic dry down with piney, floral & woody notes. For the price tag, shorter longevity of 3~4hrs is OK. I'd love to sniff the vintage version before a few reformulations, where KOLs describe as denser & more intense, avoiding the need for constant reapplication

It is one of the best classics in my shelf

Kuquii1974

Great woody, herby, piney blast of freshness. Total 90's classic and very affordable. Winner!

RobbieX

A really fresh perfume. Woody, citrussy with a touch of pine. It's lovely. Moderate performance and linear. One of the nicest Summer fragrances. It's a classic.

Apache1830

The opening is not the best, very heavy on cedar and a bit dull.

But when it dries ... Clean, elegant, sharp, a real master key, usable in every situation.

For the 22€ I paid, it's one of my best buy

9.5/10

uhohstinky

Nice Italian barbershop fragrance. You get that citrus off the top from the Bergamot. In the mid,you get rose which is nice because I love rose fragrances. In the dry down you get a gentlemanly soapy musky vibe. A must try if you are into green, soapy barbershop fougeres.

RedHerring

It's a great everyday barbershop fougere typical of the 1980s: soapy, herbal, slightly camphorous and musky. Safe and versatile scent which gives a fresh and clean vibe and in my view mass appealing as it lacks the edgier, slightly dirty and animalic edge of many of its peers. People in their 20s could for sure pull this off and distinguish themselves from the typical 'blue' crowd.

perlindvall

I always come back to this very decent less expensive perfume. It's straightforward with class.

pejatibia

It’s hard to escape the initial impression of a barbershop combination with soapy undertones. The fragrance seems to target an older audience, arguably those aged 40 and above. Imagine walking into a room filled with leather-bound books and the lingering scent of vintage aftershave — there's a distinct, nostalgic aroma of old books.

Complexity is notably absent; it's a linear, flat scent that doesn't evolve or deepen over time. It's a mix of grassy forest elements and light floral notes, but the blend doesn't inspire emotion or curiosity. It's simply 'there', a clean post-shower or barbershop aroma with no narrative or depth to follow.

Yet, its very unremarkableness makes it somewhat agreeable for specific occasions. While not a standout, it's a fitting choice for a rainy spring day, emitting an uncomplicated freshness. However, the scent does have a sharp quality, almost piercing to the eyes and nose, undermining its otherwise mild and delicate profile.

Where Cerruti 1881 Men does score points is in its value for money — expect to find it at a budget-friendly price point. It also features modest projection and decent longevity, although that might be a double-edged sword for those unimpressed with its aroma.

In conclusion, Cerruti 1881 Men is a fragrance that doesn't impress with complexity or depth. It targets an older demographic with its blend of old school soapy barbershop and forest notes, making it a hard sell for younger or more discerning noses. While it offers decent longevity, it's not a scent many would choose to wear for extended periods. Ultimately, it's a fragrance that exists without making a significant impact.

Cerruti 1881 reminds me of my Dad and the 90's. He never wore this, but it has a fresh, bracing, soapy aftershave feel that reminds me of how the bathroom would smell when he was getting ready for the day.

It opens up with a zesty, bright citrus, green accords and juniper that reminds of a sunny day that is just starting to warm up from the crisp morning air. 100% a daytime scent, and one that primes me for getting things done. It's not sexy, mysterious, beautiful or alluring or any other lofty adjectives. It's clean, dependable, balanced, and just ordinary. Pretty much what you would want in a father figure or mentor. Just show up and do the unglamourous work. To me that's class.

I will add I have a newer bottle, no oakmoss listed, and when I first purchased it I didn't love it. It was a bit sharp and disjointed. Either my nose has matured, or the bottle has matured with a couple years and some air....but this is much smoother and deeper now. The green and conifer notes are much more present, and I overall am really enjoying 1881 Cerruti.

Besides the opening few minutes, it has a pretty natural feel and is far less synthetic feeling than other scents of it's day like Cool Water. Freshness is also achieved here in a way that feels refreshing after so many ambroxan bombs of today. Flipside of that is performance is just average across the board, which is feature not a bug that adds to the respectful demeanor of Cerruti. I just don't think there are too many bargains like this out there anymore. You know you are getting old when you are writing a review and have to stop yourself from dropping "don't make 'em like they used to".

Michel Silencieux

Well balanced woody, mossy, aromatic green scent. Overall effect is fresh, clean and soapy. It does smell like a fragrance typical of the 1980s and 1990s. I think this fragrance would work best for men aged 40plus. There’s not a lot of layers to this fragrance, but it does smell classy nevertheless.

I find this is reasonably versatile, good for the office and a great alternative to summer scents typically dominated by citrus and sea notes. This is very green, sort of like a fresh forest and for the 5-6 hours it lasts on my skin it projects a clean soapy vibe. Probably not a date scent, and this is more of a daytime scent. An easy blind buy if you like green soapy scents with a retro edge. I would add that this fragrance is often discounted and is worth the price.

Jim_Smith

Irish Spring freak on a quest here. This is close enough, for me, and inexpensive

It's like a gentler, more room friendly Paco Rabanne Pour Homme, or a beefed up Frags of Ireland, Patrick.
For me, it makes Patrick redundant; it's too weak, IMO.
Beach Hut Man is the most God tier, 'Irish Spring' I've tried, but it's too good for general wear.
1881 has the moss, the citrus, the herbals, the soap. Love at first sniff. It's linear, but so is Irish Spring.
Longevity is under 3 hours on my skin. I'll carry a pocket atomiser for refreshers.
If you already have Rabanne PH aftershave, it will work with this

Johan-Peter

One of my favourite perfumes ever. An absolute classic, classy and manly.
Boucheron is not half as good as this one and very well priced.

discardedandroid

Much prefer Boucheron Pour Homme. This is clean and green, yes, but it's like.. Flat, and without sweetness. It's linear, soapy, brisk, and a bit green.

Edit: I think I didn't give this enough of a chance, and I even ended up selling my Boucheron bottle in the end. Boucheron is gorgeous, don't get me wrong, but it's pretty solidly perfume-y. This is quite a similar vibe in the air, but it's slightly more casual, and much less heavy and strong. This is a clean brisk green soap. Recommend.

Edit 2: I think in warmer weather this gets far more of a fair assessment. In colder months it's just sort of meh and non-descript. Like it's barely there and when it is it's underwhelming. In warmer weather it comes to life, not dramatically so, just that it starts to make sense. There's a brisk, green, slightly soapy, herbal and aromatic vibe that's extremely good value and also classy, natural smelling, and inoffensive. It's like the classiest dumb reach I've tried, like the best possible option to grab in the drug store checkout line. Highly recommend.

ashroloie

The nicest summer green scent you can buy. It's cheap, fabulous smelling and long lasting too. I've clocked this 5 hours later on my skin.

It's age is irrelevant. It's still good enough to compete with everything else out there today.

Vlad Gorneanu

Yes, it smells like the '90s, yes it has it's similarities with Dior Eau Sauvage, and yes it is a fantastic fragrance for late sprint & summer. I cannot believe this is $20 for 100ml bottle. It's worth more for sure. I can take a tour of Sephora or Douglas and smell far less appealing summer fragrances for 3-4 times the price. Is it something very unique?Definitely not. It has that old school vibe to it but it's definitely a better and more interesting and manly scent than the current popular warm weather scents. If you're under 30 it might not be a safe blind buy. It is worth every penny. I will definitely have this in my rotation when the weather goes beyond 18C.

Qlnmu

From the notes and other people's reviews, I should have loved this. I see it compared to Eau Sauvage which I love, but I don't smell the similarity. There is some note in this that quite literally throws me off the scent. I am transported back to school, reading a 'scratch-and-sniff' history book, perhaps a page in 'Tudor Odours' about Henry VIII's rotting toes or in 'Mouldy Mummies' about embalming fluids. I'm sure there is some aroma-chemical used in this that was also in those books! The scent memory is so strong that I can't perceive this as anything other than bad and have never successfully worn this without washing it off. From all the positive reviews here I think the problem is in my brain not in the bottle, but to rate this honestly, it has to be a dislike from me.

DanyAmano

Smells 90% like Lapidus Pour Homme.
This is cleaner and softer than Lapidus.
A much more refined, and blended than Lapidus.

Defindo

As a younger male, surprisingly, it's great. Personally, I absolutely love this fragrance. Foresty-Greeny-Soapy scent that has hints of that classic male smell. Such a nice casual scent that you can wear while traveling, walking, working and everything in between. As somebody who lives in a woody / green area this fits in well with my environment while giving me that masculine scent boost. For £16.80 this is an absolute steal and I couldn't recommend it more. Gem. 10/10.

kaleb_mi20

This fragrance was love at first smell for me. Its fresh, menthol-y. The dry down smells like a garden in the Italian Alps, so I think a floral accord is missing in the description. A bit on the sharper end, but can work for all seasons. Great candidate for a signature scent if you like green fresh fragrances.

A.Bandini

Timeless, flawless and one of the best fougeres of all times. With all those notes involved one might believe some of those would bite eachother or start smelling weird but nope. Flawless! Nothings out of place. Smooth, sophisticated masculine, elegant fougere based on woods, lavender, citruses, herbs, flowers and green shaving foam. Not sure why anyone who love and miss Gucci Nobile as much as i do, wouldnt want to give this one a try. Sure it's not the same, Guccis incredible depth as a green and mossy fougere is lacking here but it's in the same realm.

Kuldeep S

To my nose it is extremely similar to Lauder for men . No need to buy both.

Bips3000

I really love this one as I'm a huge fan of the more classical, ol' skool, masculine fragrances. I like the clean, fresh, manly vibe I get from this, and performance is excellent. When I wear it, I do feel a very slight headache coming on so I have a feeling it may be one of those perfumes that trigger migraines in more sensitive people.

[Updated review]
1881, more like 1981. This smells very much like a 20th century creation. "Ylang-ylang and oakmoss" is how I visualize this. Not quite barbershop, more bitter vegetal-floral. So yes, it is dated, but no, it's not bad. Very decent longevity.

Heeley's Cologne Officinale is like a modern remake of this. Way more expensive though...

One of my favorite scents

Messidor

It's a forest-y perfume. Forests with flowers. To my nose the scents are well balanced - not very piney or herbal but equally floral during the first half phase, and no single note significantly dominates others. During the drydown, it gets a bit more bitter towards patchouli and woody vibe.

In comparison, it's similar to Boucheron homme (the latter is more citrusy and soapier or less green and woody).

For spring, summer and fall.
Masculine.
Vintage and classic. Not quite for young tastes.

Aus10

Excellent fragrance for the price!

Fortyfree

An acrid opening of sharp citrus, then notes of lavender and pine (A dusty hot weather Pine). Has a soapy accord like many classic smelling men's fragrances. Becomes a peppery, coniferous skin scent after 3-4 hours. Longevity and projection are moderate though it can become a little nauseating if oversprayed. Suits a more mature man, scent is acceptable year round but more of a day scent.

Took me ages and plenty of wear to appreciate this. It's not instantly inviting IMO, and the comparisons to "Eau Sauvage" don't help. It's not really that similar.

RSA_Mla

This perfume is Manly due to the woody, aromatic and earthy nature of this perfume and also the fresh spicy, I spray 5 squirts of this it last 7 to 8 hours of Alpha Male Scent. Man is in the house.

Mr Nosy Parker

Looks like someone hit max spin on the perfume slot machine, all these random notes just appear in no specific order haha. And here we have a...a...a... ahh well its a fragrance a non conformist LOL.

House Adams

Excellent aromatic fougere… Simple as that.

ROUSAK

very Nice, soapy but might become boring. Despite that a good fragrance 7/10

anfielder

Personally I’m a big fan. I’m 26 and this is my go to spring fragrance although I’ve seen a bunch of people say it’s more suitable for older people I love the classic masculine freshness this brings at a great price. Only downside is I’ve noticed it can attract biting insects pretty damn well probably because it just smells
So good

Joe_Chip

For the fougere fans this is a must try. Three piece safety razor & a nice lather type of fragrance. Value for money, the current formulation performs really well. It's classy, elegant and can be worn anytime of the year. I'm halfway through the 2nd 100ml bottle, will buy again for sure.

NoseBlind70

I’ve just bought a gift set with 100ml EDT and 75ml deodorant for the princely sum of £21 on EBay. This was an offer I could not refuse.

The scent is slightly different from the 90s formulation but still close enough to appreciate.

Longevity is good on my skin, I reckon at least 8 hours after 3/4 sprays.
Bang for buck this is out of this world, completely inoffensive and pleasant, and suitable for the office. Would suit 30 and upwards gents and can be worn all year round. Best in summer and warm climates as it’s fresh/green.

BGBG

Oakmoss, forest green, woods. Absolutely masculine scent from the 80'S.

Tazahr

A timeless clean and classy fragrance. Will transport you to a cold fancy babrershop in the 90s.

Superior, more balanced and very wearable compared to similar fragrances in this league such as Boucheron pour homme. Also it is much more Versatile and highly refreshing in the hot weather.

Luxurious Gentlemen Soap for unbelievable price.

Docplaya

I agree with @JmThms. Lauder for Men is a challenging wear. 1881 smells very similar, but to my nose, it’s less dense and heavy. This is good for warmer days. In addition, the price is unbeatable.

josepet

Being Spanish, I grew up in a house where my dad had Esencia de Loewe since I can remember. That was his smell. Back then, it was a fancy, expensive perfume.

Moving forward like 20 years, I've found that, although 1881 is an amazing perfume, it´s a very, very similar drop. But for a 1/5 of the price.

I do think Cerruti is extremely underrated.

Pd. shame I can only get Cerruti sheets in Santa Fe.

cockneykid1962

In my local perfumery, this cheapie classic would always be relegated to the very bottom, dusty shelf of the display, in the shadows of the more trendy, generic and desirable fragrances. It has always been my duty to place the bottle in a more prominent position in the hope that someone will notice and try it instead of the more obvious choices. I have no idea if my ruse has ever worked, but I will keep doing it.

A little Italian masterpiece.

derby2169

A dry green conifer fougere that is surprisingly light and radiant with a touch of sweet florals in the mix. While not smelling like it, it a similar expansive relatively linear radiant fresh effect of ck one.
Essentially a very 90s low musk, clean manly day scent with that leaps off the skin nicely without being overbearing or funky. Nice!

FreddyK

Great old-school fresh style fragrance for spring and summer. Not gonna appeal younger crowd. Keep this beauty on Your shelves.

dmw

Cerruti 1881 might not be my signature, although I certainly used to wear it much more than I do now, but it still is my default springtime fragrance. I would challenge anyone to find a better value traditional masculine fougère. This is quite simply a reasonably priced, moderately commercial scent that is actually far better than it might seem. It's just really well-balanced green, woody fragrance with enough depth to keep it interesting and make me smile.

Spendthrift

For me this sits right in the middle of the top shelf.
Clean. Dry but refreshing. Citrusy. Herbal. Soapy. But not too much of anything. Old school but not old man. All the notes work together perfectly.
Lasts 4-5 hours
10/10 easily.

TheScentLover

My dog loves it! My cat loves it! Mosquitos love it! Even the bugs of my pets love it! Am very impressed! Perfectionism!

drixma

I did blind buy it based on reviews as ppl described it as classy fougere barbershop juice. I had Lalique pour homme lion and I liked the classic vibe it projected, since I couldn’t find that again I went for this, although I wish it had better performance I’m not even remotely disappointed as I love every bit of this juice,It’ll definitely have a safe place in my collection for years to come. Class in a bottle.

stephen.redeker

Tooty Fruity Cerruti!!! My journey to discover classic men's fragrances continues and this was a momentous occasion for me. I love searching for vintage formulas and I hit the jackpot with this one. I never tried this beauty before, so I bought it blind online, 2nd hand ($11 for a full 50ml). What a surprise...the box doesn't have a bar code or green dot (the box says 1.66 fl. oz). This baby is the absolute original, must be '90/'91 vintage. Love this one, strong oakmoss and lasts a good 6+ hours. Thankfully, 1881 is readily available online for a decent price, not sure of the current formulations.

Manhattan

This is spectacular.
If you are a fan of Boucheron Pour Homme or the original Denim from the 70's, then you'll love this.
Think of it as Boucheron Pour Homme's casual partner.

lifeofS89

I have no idea why my mum bought this for me in the mid 00's when i was in my teenage years, because this definatley was not in style at the time for that age range, however im glad she did. Its nice. not the best perfomer but ill always have a bottle as its a rather uplifting scent. Good fro round the house after an evening shower.

Glyph

Juniper, the dominant opening note of this fragrance, is the lightest and cheeriest of the coniferous notes, and this whole thing is reminiscent of a fresh forest glade on a nice spring day. The fir, cypress, sandalwood and cedar add to the forested effect, while the juicy bergamot note along with the lovely florals add a nice dewy freshness to everything. This is the older, greener way of smelling fresh (rather than the move towards aquatic and ozonic notes so popular today), and it is elegant, brisk, and lovely.

It would be hard to get a better deal on this too: it is just not expensive, and can be found all over the Internet. This fully deserves its reputation as one of the classic examples of the fougère genre.

Roman86

Very fresh in a green, soapy, old school way, not a modern blue fresh. It's one I hope to try in the warmer weather as it should be more noticeable. It's a pleasant smell for sure but just wish it had some more punch to it and didn't settle down so quickly. This is one I will revisit when it's hot outside as it should bloom a bit more.

sandro.agrello

My Brazillian Review

First impressions: barber shop, like a more fresh and subtle Paco Rabanne Pour Homme, with a hint of flowers.

Not harsh at all. A fresh barbershop fragrance.

If you like the genere, go for it blind.

JmThms

I sprayed this on test strip before my first test wear and was worried it would prove to be a bit rough and "challenging" in the vein of Lauder for Men (comparison above) or even Hermès Bel Ami. There was something a bit nasty in there. I typically abhor cumin, civet and castoreum, but none are listed. But click through and take a look at the 'odor profile' of the listed cassia note. Here is the essential part of it:

"...a characteristic green & ammoniac scent reminiscent of "cat piss"."

Ah ha! Lol. Thing is it did not actually wear very "challenging". I actually caught pleasing wafts of it. Comparisons I would make are maybe Hermès Rocabar and maybe even sort of Floris 1962 to a degree. And maybe reasonably near a Le 3e Homme de Caron. Not quite as "rough" as a Lauder for Men. And I don't think it's a classic Fougere although it has Fougere elements. Too much going on with it outside the classic Fougere note structure. And I don't think it's very "barbershop", although that description is more subjective. Its certainly earthy, gritty, mossy and green. But clean, soapy/powdery barbershop Fougere? Not too much. I think this will end up an actual "like". I like the old-school vintage classics better than anything as it is. It'll fit right next to my Le 3e Homme de Caron in my collection. But for comparison, tomorrow I will be wearing Ralph Lauren Safari, which was originally released around the same time as Cerruti 1881, and is in much the same style. Safari is a "love" for me, better than 1881. Smoother, no challenge to wear whatsoever.

WGG

Perfectly pleasant, wearable, benchmark fougere. Cheap as chips too.
3/5

Jayli

I like its dry-down notes fresh, musky and woody. It's durable for smelling repeatedly. You might not fall in love with its scent at first sniff. However, as time goes by. It shows its charming floral scents in a hidden way. It's not offensive but sophisticated, elegant and fresh.

Style 29

Outstanding bang-for-your-buck, this beautiful light floral 'modern' chypre is my serendipitous find of the year. I added this to my cart/order so that I got free shipping. So glad I did, as I really really love this cheapy.
* I got a decant of Roja's Diaghilev Parfum today, and except for the civet note, these two are so similar it's not funny. The price difference? You can buy 51 and half bottles of Cerruti 1881 for every 1 bottle of Diaghilev. So there's that.

theuntrainednose

Tested a mini.

--

Classic herbal-ish, woody-ish fresh fragrance, of the type you would expect on a nice-smelling shaving cream. Not bad, very reminiscent of dry herbs mixed with shaving cream. I do wear masculine scents, but usually favor the leather or spice ones. I _could_ wear this one (it's a drier version of Ô de Lancôme, more traditionally masculine), but I think I will gift it to my brother.

Woody57

I'm a sucker for anything with pine notes in it. But I'm often disappointed in its performance once I get my nose on it. 1881 is a refreshing, light, enjoyable fragrance that lasts 5-6 hrs. on my skin. It has 19 notes listed which makes it hard to distinguish them all from one another. The cyprus, juniper, pine and cedar come through without being overly woody. Once I put it on I have trouble noticing it on me, though others do. Sillage decent, though subdued The multiplicity of notes has the benefit of not allowing any one to dominate, while creating on me a rather linear, but pleasant scent bubble that elevates the mood of those who notice it. The scent communicates freshness, likeability, clean and trustworthy. Best for Spring, Summer and Fall. Leans towards more casual, but quiet versatile. Average performance on my skin that doesn't say "Look at Me!" I often wear it on days when i just want to smell clean and fresh as well as not attract attention.

MAKSTR

Typical fresh zesty scent of its era.
I happen to wear UDV on other arm though not same but pretty much same type. UDV is more citrusy and sharp and this one is more like Tsar or Jazz and in first phase it gives a fresh pine floral aroma with lavender then after 2 hrs it is more of a spicy woody floral scent. Musk, moss, vetiver and rose are subtle notes that hang along. Pretty nice longevity about 5 hrs.
You can get the same vibe with cheaper scents.
Scent 7/10
Sillage 6/10
Longevity 7/10
Value 7/10

Mystères du Château de Dé

I recently bought new a new bottle produced 2 years ago. I used to have it 20 years ago and enjoyed it. This cologne is very light now. It's still pleasant, with no off notes, but I don't smell the projection after the top burns off. What a pity.

Guitar 2016

This is one of the best perfumes of all time ! Classic and old school style , It smells so good and very pleasant. It opens up with like fresh soapy citrusy, green and floral notes in the background then dry down is musky woody. It is perfect for the spring and summer. The art of bottle design is very beautiful. I really enjoy it and I love 1881 Men Cerruti EDT . I'm so happy that I have it in my collection.
Bravo Cerruti !
Two Thumbs Up.

Man this is so satisfying. While it's obviously heavily rooted in 70s fougere territory, this is a 90s fragrance through and through. For all the woods and greenery, there's a transparent quality which alludes to its fresh and aquatic contemporaries of the time, and so I really don't get the people calling it outdated, I could see this being popular among the freshie crowd. Wouldn't be surprised if there's a dash of calone or some other marine aroma chemical doing its thing somewhere in the composition, could be wrong though. However, it's played off incredibly well, because where Cool Water, ADG and L'eau D'Issey were synth bombs (not necessarily a bad thing), this comes off convincingly and beautifully natural. It's only downside, which is actually very disappointing; I barely get 3 hours out of this. Must just be me though because I see people report all day longevity quite often, so I'll let it slide.

Who said '90s fragrances are no longer wearable? Cerruti 1881 Men is a very nicely crafted barbershop/aromatic concoction that opens with a fresh and classy lavender/bergamot/juniper accord, very much in the rein of many of the '80s powerhouse fragrances but with a touch of mentholic bitterness which I assume comes from the cypress.

After the initial nice, though maybe not very unique, opening fades a bit in the background, the scent changes profile and moves towards a floral (rose and lily of the valley both clearly noticeable), soapy scent with some slightly noticeable dirtier/earthier nuances (cassia? vetiver?), before getting again some freshness and greenness from the pine and going into a fresh, clean and pleasant dry down where the musk really gives a nice sweet shoulder to the green side of this fragrance, bringing out again the soapiness of the middle notes.

This fragrance has been surely reformulated several times - oakmoss, I'm looking straight at you! - but still performs decently: I get around 7 hours on skin, with limited projection apart from the initial blast. Definitely geared to the more mature crowd who will love the old-fashioned, elegant barbershop style of this fragrance, it is somehow dandy enough to be still relevant today. I think this is a pretty versatile fragrance, smells refined enough for slightly more formal occations, and probably manageable in winter too with some overspraying, though I would not use it after the sunset. Very likeable juice overall.

My bottle is from 2019 (batch code 9007). I'm not a huge fan of the glazed bottle - the tactile perception is of a coarse/floury surface - but you don't wear the bottle, do you?

Teddylah

Classic 'barbershop' scent, but great. Very versatile and can last in the cold weather with more sprays. Great for the price you pay as well.

Scent: 8.5/10
Sillage: 4/10 (Sits relatively close to the skin very quickly)
Longevity: 5/10 (okay, 4-5 hours, nothing beastly but average)
Price: 8/10 (If you can find 100ml under £25)

Overall a very nice masculine barbershop scent. Performance and sillage are okay but great for the price you pay.

Jack_Hunter

I get three distinct phases out of this fragrance. In the opening I get a blast of lavender, juniper and cypress with other green notes making the scent smell herbaceous. It's a bit rough for the first forty minutes and then settles down nicely and reminds me of Lauder For Men.

After a good amount of time the florals make a entrance and take the back seat. This softens the scent and it smells quite lovely whilst remaining very masculine. And yes at this point I do get the resemblance to Boucheron Pour Homme. But that one starts to lean more to the unisex side of things as the florals jump into the front seat and start to take over. So I like 1881 more as it keeps itself smelling masculine.

Finally the drydown is a very nice musky sandalwood.

The projection for the first two to three hours is good and then it reigns itself in to within a half a arms length. The longevity on my skin is excellent with all day and into next day longevity.

All in all a very nice masculine fragrance that has character and can be had for the price of a large pizza.

Happy Days!

dptwigs

Masculine, classic, sophisticated. There is a lovely green, pine, freshness to this which is absolutely lovely, and dries down beautifully. Good for day-to-day wear, leans on the formal side, I love to wear this with a nice classic blazer. Deceptively strong (on me), so I tend to use it fairly sparingly. Used to be my signature, and I may go back to it in the future...

ONE-CLASSIC-MAN

Very similar to Boucheron Pour Homme. One of the best fresh + pleasant fragrances!! Good price too! Buy it..!!

One of my best discoveries. I smelled this in the 90's from a classmate who never shared his secret. I have worn Christian Dior Eau Sauvage in the 80's and this reminded me of it. Last year, after looking for CD Eau Sauvage, the sales assistant said they were out of stock. I was offered to try Armani PH, Diorella and 1881 Cerruti which has similarities. My brother wears Armani PH, so no. Diorella is interesting which l may get another time. Then 1881 Cerruti brought me back to the 90's where most men started wearing the new trend - sweeter, lighter, aquatics. I wore them too but tend to maintain classic style fragrances. So this is what l chose. My former classmate saw me and said l really smelled good and reminded him of the 90's. He asked me what l had on me. I replied - secret, it is a classic cologne from the 1800's. He became so interested but puzzled. He got what he deserves. This will permanently stay in my wardrobe.

Its unfortunate that IFRA essentially banned oakmoss. Not sure when this fragrance was reformulated, and how much natural oakmoss it used in the first place, but my bottle smells great and performs well. I have a 2016 batch (6098) which im loving - seems like there is at least some natural oakmoss in this, but i dont have enough experience to tell for sure.

Anyways, this smells classic, but fresh and upscale. Glad I was able to pick up a bottle.

karimbaltagi

one of the best male fragrances ever! reformulated but still remains one of my favorite!
A great fresh herbal fragrance with a nice woodsy dry down. Sillage is moderate as is longevity. A nice addition to anyone's collection

grigoran1986

Excellent green, Citrus fresh for the mature man. Good performance unexpectedly
Fits well with the British fall weather. For the price, I consider this a gem

RobbieX

This is the definition of "fresh" Superb.

Ionut82

Superb!!!
Of all the barbershop perfumes,it is the most modern and easy to wear nowadays.
Classic,clean,fresh,
soapy, elegant and eulogies to him can continue...
Someone said below that the bottle would be ugly...total untrue!!!it is built perfectly for the juice in it.And at the price it sells we shouldn't even find a flaw😁!

princip

Pretty good fregrance. Some complain that it is not very strong, and it isnt, but with 6 sprays, you are guaranteed to be felt for more than four hours. Its very unique and fresh, certainly not a classical summer fregrance.

KingRidesBy96

Just the best. Sparkling crisp citrus chypre and a perfectly modulated piney herbal fougere in one. Not dated, not too strong. None of the limey, sweaty leatheriness of the old citruses (Eau Sauvage, Moustache...), and none of the dank stuffiness sometimes found in the oakmonsters. Just clear, cool, kind, and in full stereo.

I think it's perfect.

And personally, it's a lot closer to Diorella and Eau du Sud and Quartz and O de Lancome than Eau Sauvage and Boucheron. The former are fresh-wet citrus-forward chypres. The latter have sour "leathery" businessman notes.

If Diorella and Patrick shared a slow dance outdoors at dusk in summer, it'd smell like this.

pasha

It is amazing.

On me, this plays out like CD Eau Sauvage with the added oakmoss and juniper that somehow does NOT smell bitter. Very tamed. I get no pine or lemon, or other distinct woods or specific citruses after the opening. It is just overall woody and citrus-y; blended with great expertise.

It has better longevity than Eau Sauvage, but not by much.

It smells extremely manly, yet gentle. Very Italian. Mine is the recent batch, and it's quite citrus-heavy in the drydown. There are a lot more-lavender-dominant colognes out there that rely heavier on the note, so I would not pick this up for some raw lavender infused type of potion if you truly wish to celebrate and wear the note. I barely recognize it when I wear it.

Perhaps the woods, lavender and greens were a bit more pronounced when it was first released but it is still Class A.

PS: The bottle desperately needs a makeover - very dated and ugly.

alphairone

Hot weather calls for cool, refreshing scents. A noble aromatic fougere such as this fits the bill, with its quenching juniper, bright citrus and fresh pine, with a reliable oakmoss dry down.

Relatively linear, but with a timeless barbershop quality. Spray generously...

Kyffin

This smells of strimming nettled .

Andy the Frenchy

Green-ish/citrus-y/floral-ish juniper-centered fragrance with support of vetiver and woods. Ooooooh my gooooodddd what a fantastic thing!!!

The only downside is its poor projection on my skin, but for such a beauty, it's a joy to overspray! Not sure why I waited so long to get my hands on it.
A linear, simple but stunning classic, that any collector interested in something else than the usual aventus and sauvage should own. Classic but timeless.

The current pricing is a steal, what are you waiting for?
Warmer days, 30+

I Bought this from the reviews on here. I received my bottle today, immediately put it on this morning and have to say it’s really unpleasant. Opening to dry down all very unpleasant. I was looking for a citrus fragrance and that’s why I tried it.
Have to say not for me.

Br0wnsfn34

So I bought this a year ago wanting something old school- green- and barber shop like.. I decided to wear this today being cooler and rainy.. And wow!! I’m soo blown away.. with soo many other awesome fragrances in my collection this one has gotten forgotten about.. Forget no more!! This is going to be a staple in my spring summer rotation.. This is exactly what I picture Ireland to smell like.. I never been but if I were to go I’d bring this with me.. The opening is citrus-floral the mid is musky and the dry down is soapy.. the dry down is really nice and clean.. and this bottle design is really nice and the atomizer is incredible.. for 25 dollars you can’t get much better!
Overall
7.9/10

fragrand

Among the so called "old school/barbershop" cologne this is the only one that i succeed to wear and love. Especially in the dry down when the crisp bergamot takes over the floral base, so refreshing and uplifting. Masculine without doubt, best suitable for the summer season.

Ludde90

For 15€ you can’t go wrong. I get a lot of woodsy and citrus notes with hints of flowers. Very surprised with the longevity on this one, still projects after 5-6hrs and skinscent for 10hrs on me. Try it!

chrisk252

Just tried it and absolutely LOVE it. This is not an informed review, but a spontaneous, immediate reaction. For reference, I own roughly 60+ fragrances and tend towards fougeres, chypres, citrus freshies. I'm not into sweet modern frags nor animalic beasts, and veer more towards old classics.

This smells like a classic barbershop frag with just the tiniest touch of 70s animalic powerhouses, opening with stunning citrus/bergamot and drying down to beautiful pine and lavender. I'll give it a better take after some time, but wanted to capture my initial impressions right in the moment.

muminharoon

I will always associate lovely 1881 with winter. One of my very first fragrance purchases during the mid to late 1990s simply because I had never smelled anything like it before. I was pulled in by the bergamot overload, supplemented by gorgeous lavender, sharp cloves and a pine base. Made my skin tingle cold like teatree; maybe the cloves. I loved the opaque ice effect bottle too.

Very strong protection back then that would trail behind me. Perfect to wear outside in cold weather and would stick around on my coat for days.

smellyoul8ter

Any fragrance made by Martin “Marty” Gras is a winner in my book.

M-as-Marin

Unfortunately, I haven't tried any of the vintage formulations of 1881 so I can only vouch for the current formulation and oh boy...is it synthetic. Iceberg Man 2015 which is much cheaper smells at least 10X times much more natural and 100 Galaxies between much niche like than Cerruti.

I would strongly advise avoiding sniffing it up close on your hand or anywhere else since it comes way to much soapy and not in a good way. Just let it come to you. You will get all those top voted notes.

It's a nice freshie, long-lasting but with poor to moderate projection. Not a niche smelling creation by any mean. More like a designer from long-gone days...

Get's low like which is much nearer to dislike from me. Still overpriced for what it offers.

Don't blind buy if you aren't into old school fragrances.

Don Joe

This smells like it could have been great in the original formulation.

The current formulation smells soapy to me, similar to the way coriander does (makes me feel like I have soap in my mouth). I'm probably oversensitive to some ingredient, or it just doesn't work well with my body chemistry. This is not necessarily fault of the reformulations ‒ the ingredient responsible for this may be present in the original formulation as well. However, I suspect the culprit is some synthetic ingredient (likely oakmoss). Unfortunately, this soap-in-the-mouth feeling is overbearing and makes the fragrance unenjoyable for me for the first hour or two. Once it settles down, it's a decent fougere (by today's standards anyway).

For me personally, it works better on clothes than on skin. On skin, there's the soap-in-the-mouth effect, and too much synthetic wood (cedar) in the drydown. When applied on clothes, both these problems are much less severe and the perfume is quite wearable.

Sharp. Fresh. Pine. Juniper. Green. Woodsy. Resin. Like an old big hard soap on a rope. This old man takes no prisoners. Very italian, but not Eros Ramazzotti more like Marcello Mastroianni.

patman21

Oakmoss and pine tree are the main reasons why this perfume smell - IMO - dated. These notes are not common today, but they where used a lot in the 80's and before. That's why this scent has that so called "dated" vibe to it. It has nothing to do with sweetness I think.

sasa.ss

I wouldn't say it's "dated". 1881 simply doesn't have anything sweet in it's composition, if that means it's "dated" then does it mean all men should wear sweet fragrances in order to feel "modern"? I'd have to snort acid in order to wear majority of "modern" fragrances.

Anyway, 1881 reminds me of "Denim original" without olibanum, with less silage and with a touch of elegance.

answer for @patman21, Too many people judge a fragrance subjectively by it's opening notes, and many old frags have harsh opening, the rule is not to over apply, and to apply it at least thirty minutes before going out.
Rule "less is more" should be used with many old frags.

browne54

Has this been discontinued? Anyone know?

patman21

The drydown of this is very similar to Denim Original, but this has more citrus in it, while Denim is sweeter. Yes it is dated, but a grown man still can wear it I mean who the F cares what is the current 'style' of perfumes. If you like this kind of stuff, just wear it.

hossmonkey

This (20y.o. version)is a nice citrus Aromatic! It opens with a dull citrus, "dirty" pine blast & subtle musk. Settles to a dull citrus, "dirty" grass, faint musk; Finally to a woodsy mint skin scent.
I know this will not be a popular comparison, but Cerruti 1881 is like the less refined and less successful brother to Boucheron PH. I like Cerruti 1881, but not as much as I like Boucheron PH. Cerruti 1881 is still a great scent and shouldn't be over looked.

Give them both a try and let me know which you like best?

Happy Smells to one and All!

gorjan78

Nice...

teoteddy1

I've repurchased this one recently, after a 15 years hiatus. I like it, but in a different way. It was more potent back in the day, and would linger on clothes forever. It's still a pleasant smell, if subdued. However, only now I realize what a great composition this is, fresh without being one of the zillions run-of-the-mill generic freshies that bore our lives nowadays. Has some depth, lasts reasonably long, this one won't get you compliments from the young crowd, but your own nose will thank you.

RobbieX

1881 is a woody, slightly earthy ultra fresh fragrance. It's beautiful and, in my opinion, one of the nicest aromatics in the world.

GodKing

I have FALLEN in LOVE with a number of Cerruti fragrances the past few years, and Cerruti 1881 or Men STARTED in ALL.

Cerruti 1881 is a very pleasant aromatic fragrance with a fresh, soapy feel. But it's much ore than that...it is slightly herbal, a bit woody, a bit green, and with a light floral vibe all wrapped in a blanket of fresh spices.

I find Cerruti 1881 for Men to be quite a versatile fragrance and, to me, it smells professional and businesslike. It's a safe scent that will be generally well-behaved and well-received, but it's not likely to Wow! anyone either. Another big selling point for this fragrance is that it's quite inexpensive.

On the negative side, this fragrance only lasts 5 hours and projects average to below-average on my skin, so I suspect my bottle of Cerruti 1881 for Men has been reformulated and is yet another victim in the war on oakmoss. Shame!

Regardless, I still love this fragrance...would give it a 8.5/10 if only it performed better. Very nice affordable gentlemen's scent.

fgraham

I received this as a gift and completely loved it. It's fresh and light and masculine. The bottle design is cool and the scent reminds me of summer.

Talibé bamba

It’s a good fragrance nothing more

DaedalusX

Folks... This isn’t reddit.. I don’t care about your beefs with each other. I just wanted to read some solid reviews.... Not read a pissing contest between other fragheads. Please cut out the nonsense. We are supposed to be gentlemen, and we’re all part of this community. Please delete your non-related review posts and let’s just stick to our opinions about the juice please. This back and forth insults is ruining the page. If you guys have that much disdain for each other dm one another and keep it off of here, thank you.

Sigi78

Blind purchase and I wish I'd had my sight! This is not what I was expecting after all of these amazing reviews.. I am italian, I know my old school masters but this is too dated, too old, maybe a granny could wear such fragrance. Much better was our Trussardi Action of 90's school!
I don't find any direction in this fragrance, it reminds me a bit kenzo jungle but I am not a fan of such smells.
To me thumbs down. Sorry

vrosej10

This was not at all what I expected. I anticipated something, old, old school lavendery, pine cologne, spawn of the eponymous time period.

On my husband and I though, this came out closer to an aromatic hesperidic scent, somewhat marine and salty.

My husband usually glows in hesperidic scents. This doesn't work on him at all. It's flat and acrid and smells like it has bad synthetic oudh in it. It's not even linear, closer to an accord, literally only lemon and cedar, reminiscent of a part of Azzaro Pour Homme.

On me, it's lively, has serious multiple personality disorder and none of the yurgh oudh. The intial squirt has a seaside quality, like standing on the beach, in the sunshine, getting the occasional shower of spray from the surf. You can almost hear the gulls. Then there's lemon/cedar thing, just a suggestion of lavender, a soapy barbershop phase and a pine/juniper/musk section. It ends like it begins, with a salty oakmoss blast.

The longevity is decent, the projection comfortable. You will smell nice without killing people twenty feet from you. Definitely a summer only thing.

Fragrance -1881 Men Cerruti
Bottle from - 2016

He's got that peaceful old-school vibe going on.
1881 opens on my skin with a green, masculine, slightly resinous and citrusy lavender mingled with juniper.
During mid development, juniper becomes stronger with a nice touch of a bit calming bouquet of flowers with the tender trace of vetiver and pine.
This all leads into a woody, creamy, green and mossy base with a wisper of patchouli.
1881 is a classic scent,but I don't think it's outdated.However,if you prefer modern fragrances,this is not for you.

Longevity - 7/10(7+ hours)
Silage/Projection - 7/10(moderate projection for the first 1-2 hours, than sits closer to skin for the duration of the scent's evolution)
Weather - For more or less any time of year.I personally wouldn't wear this on a really cold winter days.
Age - 35+
Compliments(low-medium-high) - medium
Scent - 7,5/10

Main notes according to me -
juniper,oakmoss,lavender,cypress,pine,elemi,bergamot.

The drydown is woody, creamy, green and mossy and I get some woodiness, pine, oakmoss and cedar.

Emotions -peaceful old-school vibe,green,calming,timeless.

Occasion -For more or less any ocasion.

Try before you buy.

Jondelour

For Barber shop enthusiasts, as the era evokes, 19th century manicured facial hair, a nod to the past, an earthy fougere that has a beautiful green herbal Drydown, then gets fairly soft and inoffensive.
It's even currently highly rated among young modern bearded hip cat's, chasing classic barbershop vibes, well dressed and representing a time outside of modern luxury with a manlier classic appeal.
Sometimes it's the theatre of the whole package that makes a scent, it's interesting that it perfectly encapsulates a modern counter cultural movement and some people just think its dated rubbish.
They have no idea of the otherside of the coin.

Professor Value

I do not like 1881. I've wanted to try it for quite a while since reading the reviews and liking the notes. Finally got a 7ml sample of the vintage juice. Created in the 90's but reminds me of the 70's; the way my church's annex smelt when I was kid, kind of cleaner-/detergent-like. Some have said it smells "dated." It does, and it does not transcend time like so many others (Paco Rabanne Pour Homme). If James Bond allegedly wore Trumper's Eucris, then I'd say Mr. Bean wore Cerruti's 1881. With so many better men's fragrances out there in classic-land, I say save your money and your nose; skip this one.

AmanM

I love classic old school fougeres. 1881 is the perfect representation of this family.

This is not my everyday scent but a classic that has to remain in my collection. Herbal, woody, earthy and spicy...if you like these kind of fragrances you'll love 1881. 80s was a powerhouse decade and 90s was defined by aquatics, this fougere belongs in between. It is not similar to but is on the same woody green lines as the king Polo Green.

Manly fragrance that is not aimed at being sexy, but command respect from other male bretheren

AEL

I just love this juice.
In my top ten list.
The opening is a bit harsh however it dries down to a gorgeous floral woodsy powder.
Perfect for Spring and Summer
Not much more to add than to say that it's inexpensive, has good performance and it's classy!

1GAZINDO

Any man who des not like this fragrance needs to go and get their nose checked.
I have been wearing this masterpiece since 1989 and this still gives true "Beast Mode" performance. For the price this is hands down unbeatable.
On my skin I get an easy 12+ hours longevity with a strong, heavy projection (just how I like it) lasting 8+ hours.
It's a lady killer for sure, always get maximum compliments from this beast.
Not for the fainted hearted, you will get noticed with this one and it leaves an immense trail.
Nothing comes close within the price range, I've got Tom Ford, Gucci, Versace, Dior, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent you name it but this is the ultimate beast and long may it stay that way.
A classic in every sense of the word !!

tikander

Just stop and think of the notion of age and scent for a second. Wearing a scent won't really make you look any older (or younger for that matter). If someone thought that you were wearing and older scent when you were actually young, think of the effect you're creating. They might think yoy're bit of an old soul. That's not such a bad thing in my books. I loved the comment someone made about this making a young guy classy and an old guy hip, and the one about this getting you fired made me smile... Sir, your zesty fougere is way too lively and noticeable get out of my office.

All the notes are blending together, to create a zesty, fuzzy, bright fougere. The creamy character of a fougere is fighting hard to push through the freshness of a citrusy woody cologne or rather EdT. The fight does not go unnoticed nor does it really end. The notes separation is hardly possible, but I guess the pine wax effect keeps things cool while the sparkle of berg and patch, and creaminess of wood and dry flowers round off the effect...

I bought it blind thanks to f.com reviews, and did not regret what I got, it could have cost triple what it did. I only recently got it and might not be the best in freezing weather but its already climbing in the rankings, and just waiting to get unleashed in spring... Watch out all you young folks! Oh, but I'm only in my mid-thirties. Well maybe a bit of an old soul. You should see me rock my Eucris.

Nebby

Solid, reliable everyday fragrance for me. Quite an astringent opening but once that sharpness, bitterness even, passes, this quickly becomes the sort of classic, green, woodsy fougere I really like a la Polo; Quorum; Paco Rabane; Yatagan. The notes have that 'kitchen sink' look where a lot has been thrown into this, but it works for me. The high clean juniper and pine remain at the top throughout with the cypress and lavender lurking not far from the surface. I dig oakmoss and vetiver in spades and definitely get that here. My only departure from the note triangle above is when it comes to the pepper - when I think of 1881 I think of pepper, it's quite dominant to my nose. We're all different though eh?

A good'un, this.

TrephineArtist

I tried this today and it was surprisingly soft (considering many of the comments here), maybe something was up with the tester as I didn't get a whole lot of citrus either. A soft soapy scent for a mature man or one who likes the more mature style is what I got from this fragrance.

doktorvf

Irisch Moos Italian Style.
Beautiful, complex and sophisticated / offensive&brutal at the same time.
For the museum - almost impossible to wear.

slave for scents

Elegance of a bygone era. Clean and light, in the vein of Eau Sauvage, Lauder for Men, Dunhill for Men Bvlgari for Men and others with the same herbal, floral, musk-sandalwood-patchouli composition.
Never inoffensive, no matter how much you spray, and an all around spring and summer scent. 8/10 stars

shogogarcia

This baby is totally underrated. Personally, I wouldn't mind keeping it that way.

Yes, this definitely has an old-man vibe to it. Picture salt-and-pepper hair in a white linen shirt, slim jeans, a pair of Chuck Taylors, black wayfarers.

So yeah, this stuff smells awesome. Nothing stuffy here. This will make a young man classy, and an old man hip -- without ever smelling like he's trying too hard.

Crisp, clean, slightly powdery, blue-green aromatic fougere. Perfectly balanced. The first images that come to mind are powdery green and clear water. Definitely also echo what Jondelour (two comments below) wrote.

Safe for a blind buy if you like clean, classic, inoffensive, barbershoppy fougeres.

If you've read this far, just buy it already, it's $20!

richard.legg

I do like this scent, but there's just something "old" about it that I can't quite put my finger on. I'm not sure if it's similar to things worn by my dad or even grandad in the 1980s, but it pushes some big nostalgia buttons for me. Fresh and green with a quite floral opening for me, although that very quickly fades leaving behind a slightly soapy and clean scent with some pine and slight woodiness.

Jondelour

I deeply love the herbal green opening

It's an aromatic fougere, so it needs
time to take it all in.

To those who smell it and repel, (Moss scares some noses, try to go with it, it's still fragrance, not Grandpa)
give it a try over time, it's complex and beautifully deep green and fresh to begin.

Then light and fresh flowery on the
drydown.

It's very well done, especially considering it's price tag.

The sport version is very nice aswell.

scentitar

Another modern Classic

This has classic aspects of vetiver and green notes, but makes them modern by becoming transparent and almost aquatic.

It is as if a 80s fragrance was evolving into aqua di gio, but kept it's elegance and kept some character.

A easy to recommend and love cheapy for casual use or the new fragrance lover.

If you are looking for a gift for dad , this is a great one too.

One of the best and easy to reach for

Highly Recommended

This is what I expected 212 men to smell like , personally

JohnnyCR

Such a good, classy, masculine fragrance. It's slightly old school, but not dated. Long lasting and perfect for hot weather.

When I asked my wife if she like it she said, "Yes! Those are the kinds I like on you the most!" Win for me since I love it too.

This is a good one for someone who is looking for a cheap, classic scent. Go get it.

My 100 bottle fragrance collection is the result of blind-buying each and every bottle. Yes, every purchase was a roll of the dice. Fortunately, only a few were disappointments. And I was prepared to be disappointed with the bottle of Cerruti 1881 that just arrived this morning. I am happy to report that I love it! It definitely reminds me of Lauder for Men, which I also enjoy. But as the Cerruti dries down, I actually find it more interesting than the Lauder—more nuanced. I'm happy with this new acquisition. And I can enthusiastically recommend Cerruti 1881 to anyone who is familiar with Lauder for Men and likes that style.

Batphink

I bought my bottle of Cerutti 1881 in 2016.I remember smelling it in the early 90's and loved it,but somehow in the shuffle of life I forgot about it ,then could not find it for years.
I always had 2 -3 bottles of frags lying around and in 2016 I started my real frag journey. I
went to a shop and saw this and a week later bought it.Loved it years ago and still do.
My bottle is from 2011 so it is strong and lively and the bottle is a work of art,the kind you keep once the bottle is empty. One of the best Aromatic/fougere type scents ever,no mistaking how masculine this is!

Bought 1881 Cerruti for my lover and I love it. It's fresh, mossy, piny and forest green. And guess what, it reminds me of Eau du Soir from Sisley (yeah, really it does!) which I adore. Maybe because of the juniper, oakmoss and patchouli but specially because of that spicy, woody freshness. Some things in life are just timeless. A masterpiece!

Ticktock

I get a lot of cypress, juniper and citrus. Fresh, and green and great for the warmer months.
Quite elegant and and wonderfully put together from the perfumer that gave us Lapidus Pour Homme.
Sadly the more recent versions don't last well on my skin.
One I had in my collection for some time.

jurdaan

Fantastic fresh, light fragrance with a smooth spicy element. Sits on the appealing side of the ethanol-esque sharpness where the presence is welcome rather than something that makes you turn your face away. A fragrance I had worn for almost 5 years religiously before moving on to experiment more.

DrNDJas

Light, summery, fresh. There is a bit of fir in this that really makes it smell mature, outdoorsy, and clean. The thing I love about 1881 is that while it gives a hat tip to the old school, it remains aloof from era-categorization to me. The decided lack of any sweetness is so refreshing these days. It comes across as dry, like a walk in the arid mountain air scented with stone-pine tree needles under the intense Mediterranean sun. The dry down combines this masculine scent with a soapy, floral undercurrent that gives the aura of elegance. Sillage is polite, enough to wear in any occasion. Longevity, for me, is not bad at all for a fresh scent, 4-6 hours but longer close to the skin. 1881 is a comforting fragrance and, for the price, quite an amazing achievement. Wonderful!

MRDED

if they can remove the Oakmoss it will be very great scent

Terente

For me, Cerruti 1881 (batch 6286/2016) is like a lighter, brighter and softer correspondent of Salvador Dali Pour Homme, plus/minus 1-2 notes! Always wearable. The longevity and sillage are above average. Good quality/price ratio. Discreet, classy, complex, tonic and versatile. Suitable for men, but true MEN.

Smell 9/10
Longevity 7.5/10
Projection 6.5/10
Quality/price ratio 8.5/10

Too bad they destroyed 1881 by reformulations. Disappointing!

Marand75

Just recieved a 2017-bottle (batch.nr. 7277) 25ml edt of this, made in France, and after letting the juice settle down and obtain room-temperature, I put on 3-4 sprays.

This is a very, very nice and pleasant fougere and to my nose, smells well blended and certainly non-synthetic.
No oakmoss-extract is listed in the ingredients-list on the box, but it doesn't smell completely moss-free..?

Allthough this 2017-bottle smells very nice, I have (for comparison) just ordered a vintage 50ml bottle where the juice is ambery-yellow with oakmoss and first-grade oils, yum-yum!
(the 2017-juice has barely any colour in it).

8/10 - highly recommended ;)

RSA_Mla

Blind bought online, got this, open the box. Its smell like a citrus fougere scent it’s a masculine and aromatic the dry down is like a chill wind air that arouse the senses of smell. In a close quarter space people will stop and think and try to figure out why there sense of smell is telling there brain. JUST give a chill up your spine. Using it at any given occasion. Wonderful and Chilling.

Descartes

Very closed to a masterpiece,a very lineal aromatic fougere, fresh, sweet, woodie, lemony, peppery, has a dandy character of elegance and sophistication. I can see the similarities with Bucheron but Bucheron smells more powdery and niche .Also Bucheron has a more predominant Neroli/bergamot/petitgrain accord. Cerrutti stands still as a classic in modern perfumery. Absolutely recommended.

aet

Wasn't a fan when I first got this, but has since grown on me.
Definitely reminds me of Lauder for men. I would say it was Elegant more than mature. a deceptively complex fragrance that is very masculine without trying too hard.

legion

I love this so much.

Definitely an aromatic fougere in the mold of Paco Rabanne etc. Its a pine forest blast with very fresh greens. Not sweet at all and only very slightly citrusy. the oakmoss gives it an older feel, reminds me of Tsar. It also has a soapy clean feel, I could definitely use this getting out of the shower except maybe in really cold weather because it's not in any way warm.

This is extremely contemporary. It came out in 1990 and it definitely feels half way between the powerhouses of the 80s and the slightly more fun, wearable 90s. If you want a classic smell but want something that isn't polarizing and will blend in well today buy this. Great price, great bottle, I found it in a store today but they only had a 25ml bottle so I had to pass :( so frustrating. Will buy the big bottle as soon as I can.

Many people say that this Cerruti reminds them of the past, connecting this perfume with something old like grandpa, smell of barber shop and so on, right or wrong ?

Well, Mediterranean is one of the oldest places on planet, and millions of tourists from all over the world are visiting charming places in these areas, enjoying old architecture, culture, sea, cuisine and so on. It's no wonder that this perfume ( originally from Italy ) was created just there, in the heart of that region, where style is most important thing. It has all that vibe of the sea, Mediterranean spices, Cypress and woody smell. This fragrance smells so simple like it has only one-way-note of projection, but it is actually very complex and masculine perfume and that is what makes you like it. Have anyone noticed that I mentioned couple of times word "OLD" above?

Therefore, this is not designers trendy-fragrance for a metrosexual or a club guy. Also, It can be worn by nicely dressed younger man because it oozes with sex appeal, that's right. Cerruti is a scent of a stylish-real man, not an old man.

Anyone wearing boots on the beach will look weird, so will be a person wearing flip flops in Alaska. If (Dior Homme range, One Million, A*men, Tom ford) are pefumes for colder weather, this Cerruti is totaly opposite, and will not fit or perform in such areas, maybe it could smell different then it should. Notice that this is also not a marine -citrus fresh scent. Take care about this, before buying this frag, because performance can vary. It is non offensive frag, sillage is moderate but will be arround you for a long time during the day as a noticable skin scent.

It's obvious that Cerruti is very simmilar to original Dior Eau Sauvage (1966-2000). Cerruti is more woody, while Dior is more citrusy, and drydown is different for that matter. But, both are great. On the other hand, ADG is fantastic summer perfume accepted all around the the world and can be used anywhere anytime, but Cerruti is at home exactly where it is created - in Italy.

So, guys, buy your self Maserati convertible and drive it from Genova to Monaco on a sunny day, and spray some Cerruti-of course, it will make your day.

Did I remember to say to buy Maserati first ?

Its like a heavy powdery bogart one man show that after 30 minutes a tangerine
Note developes ,very mature scent
I would say dated but it has a lot more class then bogart and the tangerine thing
Is very intresting so i'll test it more.
In a colder inviroment.
Performance is very good but try before buy.
Its fruty if you smell the projection.
If you smell directly from skin
You get a whiff of your grand father.
In my contry most of the hotels use this
Kind of scent as an airfreshener for the
Loby. I cant say its not good its very
High quality just less my styl..
Enjoy.
Update: this one is effected very much from the oxygen
After i opened the bottle and used it a few times it
Is more sweet and the fruty note s more pronounced.
Defenetly something i can put more often .
Update: now its cold weather and also
The bottled has aired so the scent changed
This abslotly butifull scent classy and
For me not as dated as befor ..im
Defenetly loving this and use it a lot more.

There was a sense of familiarity with this the first few times I wore it. It's powdery, sweet but not overly, the green tempers the sweet. A little citrus, a little floral, a little earthy, a little powdery. If you look at most of the notes that are listed and smell it you can likely find it. I got asked today if I was wearing Obsession by CK, and the sense of familiarity hit me. I haven't worn Obsession since the early 2000's but from what I remember this is in that same wheelhouse. I looked up Obsession on Fragrantica and sure enough the notes are similar. I would like to smell Obsession again to really do a comparison as it's been nearly 2 decades but not enough to buy it again. Drawing on old memories although 1881 is similar, it's a little less cloyingly sweet, slightly more floral, and a little 'smoother', if that makes sense. I could still smell it wafting after an 8+ hour day so good staying power, decent sillage, excellent price point. I'll likely not buy another bottle but I'll definitely finish the one.

muzzle123

Kind of reminds me of Halston Z-14 but with less citrus. I definitely prefer this over my bottle of Halston. More refined and better performance. This is an old school scent but I feel a younger man such as myself should have no problem pulling this off. Great for wear around the office or at school. Overall a great purchase that only cost me $25 for a 3.4 oz bottle.

Maybe the best designer classic Aromatic Fougere? IMO yes, a classic you have to have if you are a frag head, wear this right and you will get complements with it

1881 for man is a highly underrated fragrance. It is easy to buy it online for 18~20 Euros (100 ml).
It is one of the 80's aromatic fougere beastie mode frags that still sells today; Thanks god for it as it would be a shame not being able to buy this Cerruti masterpiece any longer.
Cerruti is still launching flankers of this EDT. The last one I tried is 1881 Signature for man (2017), a fantastic leather fragrance that is selling quite well.
I tested it today with 3 women close to me and received a "so so" and two "awesome".
The bottle is quite nice in my opinion and has a very good sprayer.
It opens with a very bold and powerful green fresh vibe, due to the juniper and cypress top notes a just bit tamed by lavender.
The middle notes ensure that this fresh green vibe will endure a bit more due to a very agreeable vétiver a bit softened by Ylang and rose.
The pine and oak moss base notes do grant that this fantastic fragrance remains manly and green till the last sniff.
Its beasty longevity is easily 14+ hours. You may over spray a bit - 4 sprays not more - for a bigger sillage.
Overall I do get a vibe similar to Loewe Esencia. Different frags but evoking the same feelings.
It is indeed a very nice and unique juice.

I had Au masculine eau parfum on, after 4 hours i sprayed this over, and the mix is something out of this world!
I was pleasantly surprised, couldn't stop sniffing my arm.

Brilliant powdery old school beast full of citrus and wood scents.Bit cloying at the start but fantastic dry down and lasts for ever true classic always try to have it in my collection. Buy buy buy!

sf2explus

just got a bottle of this love the scent and have smelled this long time ago and have sampled a few times as well. The formulation would have been the older at the time.
My bottle is the new formulation. Still smells as good as ever very strong when applied so be aware of this, To me this is a classic smell and very sophisticated. I go for two sprays and no more with this and will last all day 8-10 hours.
the scent is very much oakmoss and pine type of a scent, slight florals and touch of bergamott. can be worn year round. go light during summer. I needed a a classic manly smell to my wardrobe and this is the one i will keep.

cvaile

This and Eau Sauvage strike me as siblings, the Dior is the citrus brother, and this the evergreen. They lend each other supplemental touches, but they are two sides of the same mature, lightly musky coin.

Both are magnificent aromatics and quite versatile scents great for warm weather but both have the depth for year-round use (or when you want to harken back to warmer times once the colder weather hits). I like both for work or evening use, but in practice they both go very well for casual use as well. Both stick pretty close to the skin after the opening splash, but do project enough to be detectable to those right next to you for 1-2 hours before becoming skin scents.

Love the frosted glass bottle - I think it's a great choice for warm-weather scents as subconsciously you already feel like you're cooling yourself off a bit before you apply it.

I have the current reform version, I'd love to get my hands on the original with the pre-restriction wallop of oakmoss.

Abcgefd

Nice, but packaged up in those 5 mini bottle samplers they used to sell in Argos, with Joop, Cool Water, Paco and Hugo.

Forget Freeman

A work colleague of mine wears the original female 1881 mostly every day and she rocks it really well (I bought it to her for her birthday a couple years ago) and it is always complimented according to her (I too think it smells fantastic).

With this in mind I set out to get the 1881 Pour Homme.

to use an old expression - You can't beat a classic!

1881 feels old fashioned and yet modern at the same time. This is a far-cry from the fruity bubblegum meterosexual scents of today.
Looking at the notes for this really doesn't give a true representation of how it smells (to me anyway) as it truly feels like a scent that is blended with no real standout notes.

The opening (only around 30 seconds or so) is slightly harsh to me but soon calms down and becomes fresh, green and strong.

A masculine scent for sure, I would say for a more mature user. However younger guys who are confident, well presented and well mannered could rock this too and would stand out as having a touch of class, 1881 is a cool suave scent but has a sense of authority. Think Roger Sterling in the show Mad Men, a person who's not afraid to speak his mind but has an underlying gentlemanly charm.

A perfect scent for the spring months.

Long may it continue

Mysticman

1881 is clearly a descendant of the classic Signoricci, but with its own distinct take on the green-dry floral-citrus concept. It opens very much like Signoricci, with a fresh dry citrus and green accord. As it develops, 1881 is less astringent, with just a touch of sweetness from the ylang-ylang and black currants balancing the herbal top notes. For a light fragrance of this type it's surprisingly long-lasting (at least on my skin), and it somehow retains much of the opening freshness along with the basenotes. To me it conjures up images of a bright spring day after a rainstorm, with a mixture of wet grass and leaves, blossoms, and sunshine.

This isn't a fragrance I wear often, but whenever I do, I'm pleasantly surprised at its tonic effect through the day, and at how nicely balanced and long-lasting it is.

Cheadle

This is the story of one's 200ml bottle of Cerruti 1881,

Every morning one would apply a generous amount and be off for 9 hours at the office. Good, mature competent cologne!

One kept the bottle of Cerruti 1881 and other colognes along with ones ties and handkerchiefs in a suitcase. On that particular morning, one doused oneself as usual, casually tossed the 200ml bottle back into the suitcase heard the crack then froze! One immediately saw what happened; the 200ml bottle with greater surface area struck a 100 ml bottle. The larger 1881 suffered a clean break, two large pieces plus very few fragments. The juice had lost its home and shape but like any running liquid it adapted quickly, finding spaces between the other cologne bottles, through the ties and handkerchiefs and finally onto the bottom of the suitcase.

One carefully disposed of the broken pieces and cleared out the fragments.

One was left with a fragrant suitcase, a persistent reminder of the sophisticated, crispy, soapy freshness of 1881. One later reflected on the ready availability and friendly price tag of Cerruti 1881, a repeatable purchase no doubt.

Cerruti 1881 Pour Homme (PH) consists of all the notes I would die for including patchouli, oakmoss, sandalwood, cedar, vetiver, and a lovely bouquet of roses with a pinch of citrus for added freshness. If you search for men fragrances based on notes in Fragrantica you will find almost all the bottles share the above notes are from the 70 or 80s era or some of you may regard them as ‘powerhouses’. However, what I love mostly from Cerruti 1881 PH compared to the rest of the ‘powerhouses’ is the notes which are blended so perfectly creating the perfect aroma providing me with that sense of comfort, energy and joy for hours, all seasons round at any given day or night. I do not have to take it easy on the trigger with this one as I have to do with my other powerhouses, it is perfectly safe and office friendly. The sprayer and bottle design are extremely well constructed giving it a solid and attractive feel. If there is one fragrance I would keep in my collection it would have to be this one without a shadow of a doubt.

It's Ok but not stunning.
It's an old fragance and I'm not very fan of this. I think it's a lighter fragance not strong as a men want.

Escoteric

This was a belter of a scent. I got free sample on its launch. People kept asking me what i was wearing, this was the early 90s. I bought one after having my my 1990;s one, and the modern one is poor comparing it to the old but says something that is still is the one of the best fragrances today. A very classy scent.

Green, citrusy and musky. It smells classy and performs well.
A good bargain.

Extremely similar to one of my favourites, Boucheron Pour Homme. To me, they're almost identical in terms of smell and performance.

Great! So masculine! But fresh.
Strong pepper note. Green in character. Versatile, But it shines during the day probably spring. Can be worn anytime. Very masculine. For a noble and respectable man. Casual or Formal

Real men know that scent!

Robwiz

I tested this out of curiosity in a high street store. It blew me away. The initial hit is a riot of notes, however, it very quickly settles into a wonderful dry down that's citrus, spice and wood. Altogether very fresh, clean and pleasant. It isn't a boisterous, loutish fragrance and it doesn't fill a room when you enter – absolutely perfect for my purposes.

I've read some review comments that suggest this is an old man's scent. I don't get that at all. It's just a most pleasant, inoffensive fragrance that would be appropriate in any setting. It's probably my current favourite and of all in my wardrobe the one that wowed me most on first sampling.

adoratek

Fresh... with some floral and spice and a nice warm dry down. Lasts well. Reminds me a little of Boucheron and Salvatore Ferragamo.

Underrated gem, very clean and fresh conifer pine dry down, perfect for summer days or nights. Longevity and silage pretty decent.

Blueslippers

Was my everyday go to fragrance, this opens up incredibly harsh and old fashioned but quickly turns very fresh, lemony and has an incredible drydown. I have a 30 min drive to work and by the time I get there, this is just perfect!

Can be bought incredibly cheaply at present but don't be put off by the opening or the price, this is great high quality stuff.

I regularly get compliments when I wear this and the longevity and sillage are exceptional.

RobbieX

This is beautiful. It's an ultra fresh fragrance that has moderate projection and longevity. An ideal Summer juice. An absolute classic in my opinion.

kingc01

In my opinion this cologne commences with an ineffable harsh smell. It quickly evolves into a brief melody of mossy and masculine- which is the only pleasant part of this piece. Then finally concludes with an odd synthetic smell. It reminds me of Will Smith's movie "FOCUS" which looks promising in the trailer but delivers nothing special at the end.

Soapy, woods with spices and freshness. I can't comment on what it 'once' was, so I won't. But to me I'm very happy with how it is now, although I'm intrigued to experience how it might have been. It seems to quickly disappear to my own sense of smell but others have commented on it while I'm wearing it. If you like a clean, soapy fragrance then this ticks all the boxes.

RobKY

Something about strong juniper smells dated and sad to me... I wish I could like this but I just dont.

duncan.robertson3

One my favorites. Warm, spicy, saddle soapy with sensual resins as a base. A deffo for the older mature man, who oozes sex appeal. YUM! YUM!

HidingSun

It starts harsh and smells like aftershave however it lasts long and the dry down is surprisingly very good. It's very cheap as well. I picked my 100 ml bottle for just $18.

Don't come to a conclusion with the opening. For the low price it doesn't smell synthetic at all. A great fragrance for hot days.

Few mentioned it's fit only for grandfathers. I totally disagree with that. It's yet to become dated.

Recommended.

It is true that the reformulation destroyed longevity and sillage of this fragrance , as in many others.

dmdipentino

Ohhh, at first, it smells kind of floral and sweet to me, but, then dries down to a clean, understanded scent with a 'saapy, almost cloying' accord.
All is all, I like it. Don't love it..., like I used to when I was a lot younger.
funny how your taste change as you get older.

I heard this may be similar to one of my favs, Lauder for men: not. It is more like Miyaki leau dysey. I smell a bitter citrus like yuzu note. The juniper, pine and cypress are allmost non existent, but in a vague synthetic way. Another reformulation catastrophe.

I found I like classic frags from 20+ years ago. I have thrown out or given away so many lausy reformulations. Azzaro, paco raban PH,Zino, Z14,cerutti 1881,Lauder for men, many others. What is happening to perfume industry? Guerlain and Caron have good reformulations. What has YSL done since M7? Nothing.

I will keep this one for a while, I like it better than Miyaki. It may be refreshing on a hot Summer day, not all that bad.

Present formulation: 6/10

ecojoe69

The first thing I thought when I put it on was "wow, this smells like something I used to wear." It finally came to me- Lauder for men. When I checked this site, I saw that many agreed.
Not REALLY what I was thinking I would get for a scent that suggests that pine and cedar are the main notes people detect. Being no expert, this isn't the pine or cedar you think of when you smell a candle or essential oil but rather something vaguely conferous in only the most obscure manner. Enjoyable, ok silage and longevity, nothing offensive, synthetic or bad about it. A pretty solid scent for those who enjoyed the 80s and 90s woodsy, oakmoss scents.

dr.hamada

- Thanks God, Finally I found it in Egypt and I bought it with a very suitable price ( nearly 40 US Dollars ),But after the first spray I felt that I had this one before, I'm sure that it resembles one perfume in my collection. So, after one look to my wardrobe I found it, BOUCHERON HOMME EDP = CERRUTI 1881, It seems now that I just have 200 ml of the same juice. In spite of this identical similarity between both perfumes, I'm glad to add CERRUTI to my collection.

I tried so many perfumes last years, many at the same time, that I must have mixed up my senses; I´m not so able to say this or that is really an elegant or refined one, althought certainly I could tell what doesn't look that way. Pine may be a risk note, I don't know... But here wow, well done I think! I like it better than, say, Lacoste pour Homme. And in this case it smells to me like one level up. Strong, sharp, old-fashioned? Well, you are welcome to 2010's, because doesn't push so much in any of that. Nice addition to my wardrobe, a step above of most of my now countless fragrances, mostly modern or recent releases :¬)

frogiforu5

Nice scent - complicated and refined - lasts long and projects nicely but not for anyone under 45... Feels like it could be worn to fit in with the older gentlemen in suits at a social event at a hall but nothing that lasts past 8 pm ... (IE baptism)... but even then I would reach for Jil Sander, Porsche Titan or a Ferragamo depending on the season (I`m 29)... Will probably give this to one of my grandfathers but it may be too young for them... I would put this in the 45-65 age range or older if you can still keep up in the 48+ soccer league.

silentman26

A sophisticated, masculine scent ... a blast of vetiver and pine. Notes of lavender, lemon and musk ... Fresh, woody and a bit spicy with great longevity and projection. 1881 is ideal for summer days by the sea ... and becomes one with the body ... Kudos Nino this is a classic.

nightcutter

Sadly this has been reformulated by Coty. The smell is essentially the same but the projection and staying power have gone. Shame.

Pinnacos

The cedar, sandalwood, oakmoss, carnation & juniper combo in this gives it a drydown so similar to that of Kenzo Pour Homme. I can't imagine loving this and not loving the Kenzo as well.

drakecito

Blind purchase (for a change) based on reviews, etc. ..
This time I have to say this is fine fragancia.Me positively surprised and that I expected the worst (just try "Curve" Liz Caiborne).

A woody scent with semi-sweet notes. Powerful and a little rough in its opening but when dried becomes light, enveloping and very nice with a fantastic sweet note.

Very well balanced and elegant.

Coffee King

I had forgotten all about this, picked one up today, like meeting an old friend. I can't believe how nice this remains, fresh, lively, woody, green. The opening is nice but the drydown is LUSH, very manly, love it. There is a zesty note in this I love.

jeffersonfaudan

this came in the mail today... and i love it! it's unusual... it has the 80s vibe where men smell like men and not tutti fruity... it's sophisticated yet fresh, soapy, sharp but warm and inviting...some wood...some mint...some hints of lemon...

Mr.Bobby.N

Man, this is nice.

A timeless fragrance. It has a fresh earthy-vetiver opening, and then dries down to this wonderful warm woody oakmoss/cypress/juniper smoothness. It's almost almond-like. A shower with soap.

The frosted bottle design reflects the fragrance well, because the 'feel' of this scent reminds me of warm steam coming off rocks. Very natural and relaxing.

1881 CERRUTI is one of my favorite scents... The dry-down is out of this world. The scent is extremely present and lasting without being overly-strong. A smooth and classy fragrance.
