Apple Plans Powerful Refresh Of Your iMac

Following

Shortly after the launch of the M1-powered MacBook Air and the awkwardly positioned 13-inch MacBook Pro, Apple continued the roll-out of Apple Silicon to the desktop with the revitalized iMac. Since then, the MacBook Air has been updated, the smaller MacBook Pro has been updated, and the larger, more powerful 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros have debuted and seen updates.

The iMac? It’s still stuck on iteration one. But that’s set to change during 2023.

As part of its upcoming Worldwide Developer Conference, Apple is expected to advance its silicon story to the third iteration of Apple Silicon and the titular M2 chipset family. Those who love Apple’s metronomic upgrade schedule on the iPhone and the Mxx chipsets will note that a WWDC launch for the M3 is twelve months after the WWDC announcement of the M2. If you’re looking for a release pattern, it is sitting right in front of you.

Added into that mix is the iMac, with many commentators looking at a late 2023 release for an M3-powerd iMac for your desktop.

This would skip over the M2 chipset completely…a twenty percent lift over the performance of the M1 is not to be sneezed at, but going with an M2 iMac after the M3 is announced feels unlikely. It’s also worth noting that Apple’s order book for the M2 may have been disrupted by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, and supplies of Apple Silicon may have been prioritized to the macOS laptops.

Expect the new iMac to ship with the same large 24-inch display, similar muted pastel color choices to the 2021 models, and a tweaked mounting for the display to improve reliability.

Now read about Apple’s plans for larger MacBook Air...
