Sviluppo Parallelo

Inspired by two 1970’s exhibitions by Jean Christophe Ammann, Sviluppo Parallelo investigate the boundaries between art, representation, political commitment and identity.

The project “Sviluppo Parallelo” by guest curators Noah Stolz and Radio Tramontana builds on the two group shows “Visualierte Denkprozesse” and “Processi di Pensiero Visualizzati” which Jean Christophe Ammann organised in Kunstmuseum Luzern in 1970.
The title “Sviluppo Parallelo” refers to the similarities and differences between the art scenes in Italy and Switzerland at that time. The two exhibitions investigated the ways in which ideas or even the ephemerality of processes could be given visual form. In a dialogue between selected works from that time and current positions, “Sviluppo Parallelo” identifies the ideas from that period which remain valid and current today, and those which have had to be rethought or redeveloped because of social changes. The aspects of the approach based on Über Setzungen’ (“Translations”), originally rather marginal, have gained significance over time, while others, as a result of media networking and the availability of information prevalent today, have been replaced by new ones.

“Sviluppo Parallelo” exists in two complementary forms: the exhibition curated by Noah Stolz in the context of the Stella Maris research platform has a companion piece the programme Freundeskreise Circoli degli amici, conceived by Radio Tramontana, with performances, concerts and discussions broadcast live on laptopradio.org.

Stella Maris is an interdisciplinary and constantly expanding archive which investigates the transalpine identity and grants it visibility. With the archive Stella Maris explores areas of anthropological interest in which the boundaries of national and also of institutional identities blur to the point of abstraction. One of the thought processes of this changing, heterogeneous investigation is the “Italianità” of the Italian population in Switzerland, seen as the consolidation, integration and dissolution of a feeling of community, but also of belonging in a context of emigration. Stella Maris therefore proposes bringing together and stimulating all the voices, images and also the spirits of the past, fragments, feelings of fear, anxiety and outrage.

“Sviluppo Parallelo” is inspired by the story of the two exhibitions by Jean Christophe Ammann, but also by some accompanying anecdotes which form the ideal platform to investigate the boundaries between art, representation, political commitment and the construction of identity.
