Awa Shoai

It is said that Tokushima Prefecture's indigo dyeing was introduced to Japan from China around 900 A.D. by Lord Hachisuka, a feudal lord of Awa, who recognized that the climate of the Yoshino River basin was suitable for indigo cultivation and introduced it to this region. Indigo dyeing in Tokushima Prefecture is done by a method called "fermentation dyeing" using Awa indigo as the raw material. Indigo is not a single color, but is produced from a variety of colors, including blue, red, purple, and black. Because it is not possible to dye the cloth with a deep color in a single step, the process of dyeing, pressing, and drying is repeated many times. It is said that the original color of the Awa Shoai Dyeing Method comes out after about 30 rinses in water, and each rinse removes the out-of-harmony color to produce a deeper color. Also, the unique fragrance, which is said to have an insect repelling effect, gains its flavor with each passing season, giving the wearer a sense of peace and comfort. In 1968, it was designated an Intangible Cultural Asset of the prefecture as the "Awa Shoai Dyeing Method," a traditional technique that continues to be handed down to this day.
