If you've come across even just one video on skincare TikTok or found yourself in a r/SkincareAddiction hole, chances are you've heard of vitamin C. Best Vitamin C Serum Overall

Maelove Glow Maker

Pros
  • Oil free (!)
  • Gives my skin a major glow without feeling greasy
Cons
  • Oxidizes within a few months, so you have to use up or replace often

I've been using this vitamin C serum religiously since 2020. It legit checks every single box. The formulation is oil-free (which my oily, acne-prone skin loves) and uses the ideal combo of l-ascorbic acid, ferulic acid, and vitamin E to help slowly fade my acne scars and fight off free radical damage and pollution that can lead to fine lines. But most of all? It's hella affordable, at less than $35 a bottle.

I just pat it on my skin after toner in the morning. It gives my skin a ridiculous glow, but it doesn't feel greasy or heavy at all. Then, I'll layer on a moisturizer with SPF and be on my merry way—bright, dewy skin and all!

  • Fragrance free? Yes
  • Skin types: Dry, oily, combo, acne-prone, sensitive
  • Usage: Morning

Glowing customer review: "I just started going through menopause and my skin has been just blech. Boy, I’m glad I purchased this. My skin has never looked this bright or felt so good. My dark spots have lightened up as well. My mom even said my skin is so bright and looks so healthy."

L’Oréal Paris Revitalift 12% Pure Vitamin C Serum

2
Best Vitamin C Serum for Acne-Prone Skin

L’Oréal Paris Revitalift 12% Pure Vitamin C Serum

Pros
  • Helps exfoliate dead skin with a lil salicylic acid
  • Hasn't broken me out, unlike many other vitamin C serums
Cons
  • Might be a bit too intense for those with sensitive skin

Annoyingly, most vitamin C serums I've tried have broken out my extremely acne-prone skin (they often are filled with moisturizing oils, which is great for dry and sensitive skin; bad for my personal pores). But this one actually blends L-ascorbic acid with salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid that's oil soluble, meaning it can go into your pores to help dissolve the gunk and oil that tends to clog them and cause zits. It's not called the GOAT for acne for nothin'.

In this formula, the two work together v well to brighten your skin. Salicylic acid helps give you clearer pores, which can make them look a bit smaller and give your entire face a brighter look. Plus, for the lazy ppl out there (hi, it me), you only need one product to target both acne and wrinkles in the morning. We love to see it.

  • Fragrance free? No
  • Skin types: Oily, combo, acne-prone
  • Usage: Morning

Glowing customer review: "I really like this. It was a little sticky at first, but absorbed right into my skin. It didn't burn or anything like that. My skin felt soft and moisturized, but also my pores seemed smaller."

Pros
  • V lightweight and non-sticky formula
  • Testers love how affordable it is while still being super effective
Cons
  • 20 percent vitamin C could be too strong for some folks with sensitive skin

You cannot scroll on Reddit without finding a mention of this affordable vitamin C serum. Literally. I read so many threads, and this one came up every single time. And after testing, I totally get why. This formula is loaded with a v-potent 20 percent dose of vitamin C, which majorly brightened my skin after a few months of use. Plus, it's also got the O.G. vitamin E and ferulic acid combo we all love to help boost the line-smoothing, antioxidant power. Redditors (and me!) swear it's a great option to try if you love Skinceuticals C E Ferulic but wanna spend a lil less cash.

  • Fragrance free? Yes
  • Skin types: Oily, combo, acne-prone
  • Usage: Morning or night

Glowing customer review: "I am 50 years young and I’ve been working on all the dark spots on my face due to tanning in my younger years. This product has been very effective. My face is brighter and I’ve noticed it has reduced a lot of my dark spots. Some of them have completely disappeared. It’s a YES for me."

4
Best Vitamin C Face Oil

Biossance Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Firming Oil

Pros
  • Reviewers swear by how glowy and hydrated it makes their skin look and feel
  • Uses a more stable, less irritating form of vitamin C to help brighten and firm skin
Cons
  • Contains essential oils, which might irritate some skin types

One of my besties said once that she'd literally sell her kidney if it meant she'd alway be well-stocked with this vitamin C face oil. Obviously, her comment made me try it immediately, and yup, I get the hype. This oil gives my skin a major glow, whether I slather it on right before sunscreen in the morning or as the last step of my routine in the evening.

This formula actually contains a less common form of vitamin C, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate. It's a stable form of vitamin C that has a lot of promise in its ability to absorb well into your skin to boost collagen and brighten and protect skin (but it's gotta be studied more). Because of all this, it's likely a lot less irritating, which is great for those who typically find vitamin C serums to be a bit too much for their skin.

  • Fragrance free? Yes* (*but contains essential oils)
  • Skin types: Dry, some sensitive types
  • Usage: Morning or night

Glowing customer review: "I’ve been using this oil for a year and ran out two weeks before the Sephora sale. Worst two weeks ever! I tried to use some leftover squalane from another brand, and it didn’t even compare. Finally got my new bottle and my skin feels hydrated and glowy again!"

Best Cult-Favorite Vitamin C Serum

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic

C E Ferulic
5
Best Cult-Favorite Vitamin C Serum

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic

Pros
  • Helps quickly fade hyperpigmentation
  • Stays active on skin for up to 72 hours
Cons
  • Formula can feel slightly tacky on skin
  • Not suitable for acne-prone or super sensitive skin (try Silymarin CF instead)

Ask any dermatologist which vitamin-C serum they recommend to patients and personally use, and I guarantee you they’ll say it’s this one from SkinCeuticals. The serum is absolutely iconic, and contains L-ascorbic acid (one of the most stable, well-studied forms of vitamin C), as well as vitamin E and ferulic acid, which boosts the efficacy of the vitamin C. And very cool fact: The formula stays active for 72 hours after you dab it on, even after washing your face.

I've personally gone through multiple bottles of this formula over the years, because it gives my skin an immediate lit-from-within glow and helps keep my skin clear, plump, and bright over time.

But FYI: C E Ferulic isn't the best option if your skin is oily and/or acne-prone, warns Cosmo deputy beauty director Lauren Balsamo. But (!) no worries, because she actually swears by Skinceuticals Silymarin CF, a slightly reformulated version filled with vitamin C, ferulic acid, and salicylic acid to help curb breakouts and give your skin a healthy glow too.

  • Fragrance-free? Yes
  • Skin types: Dry, combo
  • Usage: Morning

Glowing customer review: "This is hands down the best vitamin C serum I've used, and I've tried a range of different brands from The Ordinary to Drunk Elephant. CE Ferulic is the only product that has made a difference in my hyperpigmentation and dark spots. The texture goes on smoothly and is absorbed by my skin quickly, making it easy to integrate into my routine."

Best Vitamin C for Daytime

BeautyStat Universal C Skin Refiner

Pros
  • Layers well with moisturizers, sunscreen, and makeup
  • Helps brighten skin and improve the look of fine lines or uneven texture
Cons
  • Some reviewers say it made their skin feeling tingly

Another cult-favorite formula, this vitamin C serum with 20 percent l-ascorbic acid and antioxidant-rich green tea extract is a must for brightening, smoothing, and firming skin. Plus, it’s free from skin irritants (like synthetic fragrances or dyes, drying alcohols, and essential oils). I personally like to smooth it over clean skin each morning (the gel-like texture layers perfectly under SPF and makeup products) as the first step in your skincare routine.

  • Fragrance-free? Yes
  • Skin types: Dry, combo, oily, acne-prone
  • Usage: Morning and/or evening

Glowing customer review: “I have tried so many vitamin C serums over the years and none compare to BeautyStat. I have some discoloration as well as melasma and this has made a world of a difference. It’s easy to apply and isn’t sticky or uncomfortable—plus, it layers well with my other skincare.”

Best Vitamin C Serum for All Skin Types

Hyper Skin Brightening Dark Spot Vitamin C Serum

Pros
  • Suitable for all skin types and skin tones
Cons
  • Some testers say there isn't very much product in the bottle for the price

"I kept seeing rave reviews of this vitamin C, so I decided to test it out and let me just say wow, I'm so glad I did," says deputy beauty director Lauren Balsamo. "The ultra gentle—yet effective!—formula is now a regular in my skincare lineup." It’s filled with vitamin C, turmeric, kojic acid, and fruit enzymes to fade dark spots, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from old breakouts. And unlike many vitamin C serums that be too intense for certain skin types and tones, this one is formulated to be used by all, which is something you rarely see in the skin world.

  • Fragrance-free? Yes
  • Skin types: Dry, sensitive, combo, oily, acne-prone
  • Usage: Morning or night

Glowing customer review: “This serum is amazing. My skin is so glowy after using it and I have dry skin that tends to get dull. I am able to wear it in the day time with SPF and have no issues with burning on my sensitive skin.”

Best Vitamin C Serum for Oily Skin

PCA Skin C&E Advanced

Pros
  • Waterless formula prevents the formula from degrading prematurely
  • Dries down to a matte finish that's ideal for oily skin types
Cons
  • Texture is thicker than most vitamin C serums

"PCA Skin’s C&E Advanced is one of my favorite vitamin C serums," says licensed aesthetician Candice Miele. “It has a creamy texture that’s hydrating but dries down to a matte finish, and the 20 percent l-ascorbic acid is fantastic for brightening dark spots and evening out your skin tone.” In my testing experience, the formula layers beautifully under SPF and makeup and really helps improve discoloration since it's combined with other brightening ingredients like hexylresorcinol and protective antioxidants like vitamin E and silymarin.

  • Fragrance-free? Yes
  • Skin types: Oily, combo
  • Usage: Morning and/or evening

Glowing customer review: “Right away I was very pleased with how this felt on my skin, it's not sticky or tacky and it leaves a matte finish after application that feels tightening in a really good way. It absorbs fully into the skin, which gives me confidence that it is getting to work. I feel as though I am already noticing a reduction in redness and discoloration, as well as the fading of a scar I have long wanted gone."

This powerful serum combines vitamin C with glycolic acid (a potent AHA that helps boost cell turnover and get rid of dead skin cells) to make your dark spots lighter, your pores smaller, and your skin surface smoother and more even. It's one of the few vitamin C serums I've tested that successfully lightens dark spots *and* makes the rough, bumpy texture on my cheeks and chin less noticable.

    Cons
    • Not widely available at traditional beauty retailers

Before you splurge on a pricey peel or a laser treatment (like Fraxel or Clear and Brilliant) to get rid of your dark spots, give this brightening vitamin C serum a try. It quickly fades surface discoloration and dark spots while providing your skin with much needed antioxidant protection against free radical damage,” says licensed aesthetician Brittany Blancato. “It’s a product that I can count on to do exactly what its supposed to do: give your skin an even-toned glow and protect it from future damage.”

    • Fragrance-free? Yes
    • Skin types: Dry, combo, oily, acne-prone
    • Usage: Morning or night

Glowing customer review: “This is truly one of the best vitamin C serums I've tried. It has made my skin look clearer and feel firmer—my dark spots are nearly gone!”

What does vitamin C do for your face?

    black line

Vitamin C has many skin benefits. It inhibits the production of excess melanin in your skin, which, in turn, helps prevent and fade acne scars, melasma, and dark spots. Vitamin C also plays a critical role in the formation of collagen, so it's also able to smooths fine lines and wrinkles over time, says dermatologist Shari Marchbein, MD.

Not only that (told you to brace yourself), but vitamin C has antioxidant properties that help prevent free-radical damage from things like UV and pollution to keep your skin healthy and glowy, says Dr. Marchbein. In fact, using a vitamin C serum can actually make your sunscreen work better, so applying one every morning is ideal in order to protect your skin from harmful sun damage, explains Dr. Marchbein.

What is the best vitamin C recommended by dermatologists?

    black line

Dermatologists says the best vitamin C serums contain one of the seven commonly used forms of vitamin C, below. Dr. Marchbein breaks it down:

    • L-Ascorbic Acid: The most powerful and well-studied form of vitamin C. While very effective, it may be too strong for those with sensitive skin. Plus, it’s unstable so if it’s not properly packaged it can become inactive.
    • Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (THD): A form of vitamin C that’s as potent as L-ascorbic acid, but much more very stable and less irritating to the skin.
    • Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate/Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate: Two stable, hydrating forms of vitamin C that pair well with niacinamide.
    • Sodium Ascorbate/Calcium Ascorbate: Often referred to as vitamin C esters, these are two more stable and non-irritating forms of vitamin C:
    • Ascorbyl Palmitate: One of the least powerful forms of vitamin C, but it’s the most stable (aka least likely to break down when exposed to light or air) and a great choice for sensitive skin.

Can you use vitamin C everyday?

    black line

Absolutely, vitamin C can—and should!—be used every day, says Dr. Marchbein. "Unlike Retinoids which can be drying or irritating to the skin and require time and gradual usage for your to acclimate, vitamin C serums are typically well-formula and should be used every morning."

The key is finding the right formula, so be sure you’re using a vitamin C serum that’s well-formulated (like the 15 on this list) and designed for your skin type. "Those with sensitive skin may do best with an emollient-based vitamin C serum where those with acne- prone or oily skin might prefer an alcohol based formula," says Dr. Marchbein.
