'The Voice:' Reagan Strange and her mother journey together on show

November 01 2018 - Reagan Strange, 14, is a contestant on The Voice.

Being a 14-year-old has its own set of limitations. Reagan Strange can not drive or vote. She is still a kid, but she does not see her age as a limitation as the second youngest contestant on NBC's 15th season of "The Voice."

Reagan is one of five contestants under the age of 18. Her age is a factor that some viewers have a hard time believing. She sings her songs and pairs them with emotion, something Kelly Clarkson said does not usually come through so young.

"I actually learned to do that this season with Adam (Levine)," Reagan said. "When we were rehearsing for the battles it clicked and people like it."

Reagan said being a minor on the show has been to her advantage. She has long days that are usually about 12 hours long, but teens get out of practice earlier than some of the adult contestants do.

"I'm able to go to bed earlier," Reagan said laughing.

Her mom, Amanda Kucinski, said she ensures she gets plenty of rest. Younger contestants also get a day off unlike the adults, so each Saturday they get a day to relax.

Kucinski also ensures Reagan drinks eight bottles of water each day and is taking her vitamin C. She also helps "guide" Reagan as she makes decisions.

"It's OK to step and use your voice and tell (coaches) you don't like something," she tells her daughter.

Growing closer

Reagan's mother has a musical background. Reagan's grandmother was a concert pianist, and she took piano lessons at a young age and sang in choir. Kucinski said although her musical career focused mostly on piano, she is still able to talk to Reagan about music theory.

"All of us are pretty musical," Kucinski said. "We say Reagan got the super gene."

Kucinski has been the adult with Reagan 90 percent of the time. Her father and two grandmothers have also spent time as the adult on set.

"I think when I'm gone, it makes her realize the value of my presence," her mother said.

Kucinski, a mother of four, said the one-on-one has strengthened their relationship.

She said she's realized her daughter's "love language."

"(Reagan) likes to have her back rubbed in the morning," she said. "I know it sounds silly, but it makes her feel important. It makes her feel valued ... It makes her respond in a more positive manner."

She said when she takes those few moments in the morning, she realizes their days go smoother.

Staying busy behind the scenes

At this stage in the competition, Reagan said she spends less time in music rehearsals and more time in production and doing various interviews.

Each time she is in production or on set, her mom is there as well. Her mother says that during her interviews, she mentions Memphis.

"I'm proud that she's wanted to be engaged in the community ... without hesitation," Kucinski said.

She said she has also been amazed by the work her daughter has put in. On top of the many rehearsals and interviews, each minor has to complete 15 hours of school each week.

"I don't get complaining from her," she said. "This is something she really wants and she's willing to do what it takes."

She said she has grown close to the other minors' mothers.

"We are all dealing with a lot of the same things," she said.

She also said the contestants are all really close.

"I know it's a competition, but they really are a family," she said. "Whoever wins, I think you'll see some of them performing together in the future."
