LIV golfer Matthew Wolff has issued a response to Brooks Koepka’s criticism, stating the choice to give up on him is ‘heartbreaking’.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated, the five-time major champion admitted to giving up on Wolff, as his talents were ‘wasted’.

Koepka slammed his compatriot, claiming it is too difficult to have a team dynamic when Wolff ‘is going to quit on the course’ and ‘break clubs’.

The Smash GC team captain also hit out at Wolff’s lack of effort and general attitude, after suffering a tumultuous season on the Saudi-backed circuit.

But in a statement to Sports Illustrated, the former PGA Tour winner wrote: “I read the SI interview with our Captain Brooks Koepka, and it was beyond disappointing to me.

“Like everyone who has ever played the game at the highest level, I have had competitive moments in the past that I feel I have let myself down and even others in our new team environment.

“My challenges on and off the golf course with my mental health has been well documented. I deal with those challenges every day.

“To hear through the media that our team leader has given up on me is heartbreaking.

“It’s not what a team member looks to hear from its leader, and I think we all know these comments should have been handled much differently.

“I trust Brooks wants what is best for our team. But it’s hard to imagine his comments in his recent SI interview in any way line up with those priorities.”

The former world number 12 enjoyed a strong start to the season, finishing in ties for seventh, tenth, and fifth at Mayakoba, Tucson, and Orlando, respectively.

But Matthew Wolff has plummeted down the LIV standings due to recent results, while Brooks Koepka sits in second. Smash GC are currently 7th in the LIV Golf team standings.
