John Whitney: Father of Motion Graphics

This is a self-initiated project that I created in order to better learn After Effects and motion design. I decided to take the meta route and make a short video about the history of motion graphics, and in my research I learned about a character named John Whitney. He was an abstract animator who made major contributions to motion graphics technology.
What ended up being the biggest challenge was the planning and editing that goes into making this kind of video. I have experience designing more narrative storyboards, but something like this–a video essay of sorts–was much newer to me. Creating this project
was a great learning experience, and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.

Below is a list of footage that I sampled, such as animation examples and interviews with John.
