A consumer watchdog reprimanded Domino’s Pizza Japan Inc. for misleading advertisements that failed to clearly state additional charges.
In a notice issued on June 27, the Consumers Affairs Agency ordered the pizza chain to take measures to prevent a recurrence.
From October 2022 to April 2023, Domino’s Pizza charged a service fee of up to 7 percent of the order or 299 yen ($2.08), whichever was lower, on every order, according to the agency.
The chain’s advertisements stated this but only in fine print in the corner of its fliers, leading many customers to believe their orders were cheaper than they actually were until they got the bill.
The company said it stopped charging the service fee in April and included the cost in revised, higher prices.
