Salone del Mobile or the Milan Furniture Fair takes place in Italy every year. In its 59-year history, the fair has positioned itself as a platform that initiates all the furniture and interior design trends of the year. Thousands of highly prestigious brands and emerging talents attend the event to show their innovative proposals and gradually build a place for themselves in the competitive world of design.

What is Salone del Mobile?

Its official name is Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano but it is also known as Salone, Salone del Mobile, Milano Salone and Milan Design Week. Salone del Mobile is a furniture fair, the largest of its kind, where the latest in furniture and design are presented internationally. Also, it is a platform where lighting proposals and other furniture pieces for the home are exhibited.

When and where is Salone del Mobile held?

The Milan Furniture Fair is held annually, during the month of April, at the Fiera Milano complex in the city of Rho, the metropolitan area of Milan.

History of Salone del Mobile

The first edition of the Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano was held in 1961. Originally, it focused on the Italian furniture industry and the original sponsors were furniture manufacturers from the Federelegno-Arredo Trade Association. Over time, the fair grew in size and currently includes nearly 2,500 companies, more than 700 designers and 2,70,000 attendees from all over the world. It is currently organised by Cosmit SpA—a trade fair corporation and a member of ICSID—and the Industrial Design Association.

The secondary exhibitions of Salone del Mobile

In the framework of the fair, some secondary exhibitions are held which have a specific focus.

Euroluce

Euroluce, the exhibition dedicated to lighting proposals, takes place every odd year. It has been carried out since 1976 and presents the most innovative lighting solutions for both interior and exterior spaces.

EuroCucina / FTK - Technology For The Kitchen

Launched in 1974, EuroCucina and its side event FTK—Technology For The Kitchen are the leading platforms that present high-end kitchens and specialised appliances respectively. All exhibitions at EuroCucina incorporate contemporary design, technological innovation, state-of-the-art performance, energy efficiency and ease of use that help conceive the kitchen as a place of coexistence and interaction.

International Bath Show

The most recent initiative launched within the framework of Salone del Mobile, the International Bath Show was first presented in 2003 as a subsection of the fair and later in 2006, it became a secondary exhibition. As the name implies, its focus is on showcasing innovative bathroom products and ideas while providing a complete breakdown of industry trends.

S.Project

S.Project is a transversal space dedicated to designing products and decorative solutions and interior design techniques. S.Project aims to be a new business-to-business platform that supports the alliance between retailers, designers and businesses, providing an inclusive experience and the best network environment. It is the ideal place to exhibit manufacturing excellence, new concepts and innovative solutions for professionals in the sector and national and international buyers.

Salone Satellite

Salone Satellite was the first event to focus on young designers, instantly becoming the unrivalled place to interface with manufacturers, talent scouts and the most promising young designers. Since 1998, it has taken place simultaneously with the Salone del Mobile Milano. Its creation was essentially a statement of faith in the creative potential of designers under the age of 35. Many of the prototypes featured in previous editions went into production and of the 10,000 designers who have participated over the years, some of them are now big names in the design world.

Salone del Mobile di Milano 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic

The organisers of Salone del Mobile in Milan announced through their Twitter account that 2020 edition, intended to take place from April 21 to 26, was postponed due to the current health crisis.
