It seems the iconic Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland inspired more than just two blockbuster movies. It was also the muse for a residence located just outside of Atlanta. The doppelgänger home is a near-exact replica of the exterior of the notable attraction, and it’s now for sale for $2.2 million.
“The original owner, Mark Hurt, was a contractor for the Disney Company,” Gail Laney of RE/MAX Around Atlanta, the home’s listing agent, says. “He grew up a Disney fan because his dad was an animator for Walt Disney.” When building the property, Hurt got permission to access the original plans of the Haunted Mansion home, which is located in Disneyland in California, in order to match his house to the architecture and proportions of the ride. The upper and lower galleries feature elaborate cast iron, one of the most recognizable elements of the original, which Hurst had forged in the same foundry that worked on the Haunted Mansion ride. The current sellers are looking to downsize now that their children have grown up
Though the home is not haunted, it is certainly a mansion by most standards. The property spans 10,000 square feet and includes six bedrooms and bathrooms. The primary bedroom offers a private porch, kitchenette, and two large walk-in closets. A full bar, pool room, poker table, and media space can be found in the basement in addition to a chef’s kitchen, butler’s pantry, and grilling deck on the main level. An unfinished apartment is located above the garage, offering opportunities for new owners to customize.
The residence is located in Sweet Bottom Plantation, a gated community in Duluth, Georgia, that describes itself as a “neighborhood of historically inspired residences.” Many homes take cues from Colonial, Creole, and Greek-revival homes found throughout cities such as Charleston, New Orleans, and Savannah. “Hurst got approval from the Sweet Bottom developer [to build the home there], as it was a perfect fit for the New Orleans section of the community,” Laney says. Living in the neighborhood offers access to a number of community amenities, including a clubhouse, playground, pool, tennis courts, and pickleball court.
Though you can’t live at the happiest place on earth, the unique residence proves it is indeed possible to take some of the magic home when you leave.
