Editorial Reviews

From the very beginning of his glittering career, Rolando Villazón has shown himself to be an outstanding Verdi interpreter. On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Italy s greatest opera composer, Giuseppe Verdi 1813-1901, Virgin Classics releases Rolando Villazón sings Verdi, a compilation of Verdi arias sung by the master interpreter Villazón. This album includes best loved arias from La traviata, Rigoletto, and Macbeth featuring leading conductors like Antonio Pappano, Michel Plasson, and Marcello Viotti.

In the same way as Pavarotti first made his name in the part of Rodolfo in La Bohème, Villazón began his career by singing Alfredo in La traviata, and his performance of this role won him acclaim in opera houses throughout the world from the Bastille Opera to the New York Met, from the Berlin Staatsoper to the Los Angeles Opera, and from the Salzburg Festival (in the celebrated Willy Decker production) to the Orange Festival. He has also regularly sung the part of the Duke in Rigoletto, particularly in London and in New York.

Villazón s dark-toned and passionate voice, fiery temperament and individual style of singing (which manages to be both virile and refined at the same time) make him an ideal interpreter of Verdi s heroes both the regular heroes and the more troubled ones. It s safe to assume that for a long time to come, Viva Verdi! will trigger the response Viva Villazón!

Well, Villazon gives it his all, doesn't he -- and it's painful to read reviews of some of his more recent performances, which suggest that the old freedom has gone and that the voice has now to be carefully husbanded. But ten years ago, at age 31, when the material with Viotti was recorded, it was a different story; we had a good sized voice, with an attractive dark coloring that didn't preclude freedom at the top, and an approach to singing that captured the intensity of desperate men. It's very exciting, and if I say that it lacks some nuance and refinement, that doesn't mean that it's crude. The gems here are from the Viotti recital -- nice work from "Rigoletto" and "Traviata especially, an ardent "La mia letizia" from "Lombardi," and a rather inexpressive but still nicely voiced "Ah la paterno mano" from "Macbeth." The "Ballo" and "Ernani" excerpts from 2005 (with Plasson) aren't bad, though some of the warmth has gone from the voice, and the "Ingemisco" (2009) is a bit careful at the climax. Still -- at his best, he could be ardent without singing through his tone, as Di Stefano did too often, but he doesn't match the ideal blend of refinement, beauty, and ardency that marked the best work of Carreras in the 1970's. But let's face it -- you would love to hear singing like this on the stage.

Villazon has had vocal problems, some requiring surgery, since 2007. I don't know enough to say whether or not this was just bad luck or a result of defective technique, but prior to these troubles, he had something that Grigolo, and even Calleja, hasn't shown me yet.
UPDATE 2020. Just sampled some of his singing from the DGG “Don Giovanni” conducted by Nezet-Seguin, and it’s impressive. The voice is still recognizable, and the singing is under control without seeming unnaturally careful. He rips off “I’ll mio tesoro” with panache and a masculine fervor that not all Ottavios can manage. Good for him!

As another reviewer has stated, there is nothing new here. All of this is available, on prior CDs and with better quality. Also, some of the final notes are simply cut off, prematurely ending the tracks. The CD is only about half full. There are many more Verdi arias, for the tenor voice, which could and should have been included.

This is not new material. It's all repackaged from prior CDs which you may already have. Two recital discs and the Requiem under Pappano. If you already have those, don't buy this. Get the really new DG disc instead.

Villanzon and verdi are meant for each other! Look for his cartoon drawing of Verdi on the inside cover of this album!!!
But...the first time we heard/saw him was in Traviata with Netrebko ,as staged and performed in Salzberg and my husband ( a fanatic and knowledgable opera lover) and I were blown away by both their voices and acting ! Hope villanzon comes back some day to perform at the LA opera. Meanwhile we will just keep buying DVDs. Enjoy ! Edie locke

La boîte du CD est fendue. Vu le prix du produit je ne vais pas le retourner mais j'espère juste que le CD lui-même est en bon état. Je le saurai le soir de Noël... j'ai cependant commandé d'autres CD et DVD qui sont arrivés en état.
