Overall a good solid action game. If you were a fan of the original Legend of Kage, or just want to add an old school action platform game to your DS library, you can't go wrong with this title!
This game seems like it would've been an incredibly awesome one. The graphics are lush and detailed, the music rocks, the combat was excellent and felt great, and the storyline is epic! There is no way how this one could go wrong! Or so I thought.
The levels were reeeaally bland in design. Plus, I realized that I didn't even have to fight the enemies to move on (Although there are some neat mini-bosses at times). A great majority of the time playing was spent just simply going across the level. The difficulty in these parts doesn't even exist. I hardly got struck by anything as I was just holding right and timing my attack when necessary.
Then came the boss battles. This was where the game redeemed itself a bit. The bosses are challenging and very well-thought out! It fits perfectly well with the game's combat, which was just as brilliant.
If only this game was about just these bosses alone. Y'know - Like how Mega Man: The Power Battle was all about killing the Robot Masters (bosses of the Mega Man series). These amazing bosses in The Legend of Kage 2 contrasted greatly from the levels to the point where I felt like the levels were just filler to add to the game's length.
Speaking of which, I only spent an hour and a half before I reached the final boss. Actually....This was where things got brutal for me. The level before it was actually not that bad compared to everything else. After all, it had CHALLENGE! I was actually attacked by enemies! However, the final boss himself...was hard as HECK. He even manages to be harder than the boss in which it was the 3 bosses before it COMBINED. He's that difficult!
But all in all, The Legend of Kage 2 is a really polished game, but it can't seem to make up its mind in terms of difficulty and design. The levels are utter crap, while the bosses are incredible. The levels are too easy, while the bosses can get hard (and the last boss can get BRUTAL).
This is based off of a kind of "underground" NES cult classic. As for the DS version, I think it's really cool that this was released in the first place, given that the original was sort of an lesser known gem and may only be remembered by a lot less people than games like, for instance, Ninja Gaiden - a similar title, or all of the other greats like the Mario franchise or Contra, Zelda, Metroid, Punch Out... the list goes on and on, as there were a lot of greats for the NES.
Legend of Kage for the DS though was an unexpected pleasant surprise. I really enjoyed playing an improved version of an already fantastic game
The graphics and gameplay are much improved, obviously, and the integrity of the original game remains intact. I'm not sure exactly how popular Legend of Kage was for the original NES - like I said, I think it was one of those gems that was undiscovered by a lot of NES players, but was a fantastic platformer/action/arcade game as is the DS remake. The story is simple in the original - you are a ninja who must save the captured princess, but the new version has a fantastically updated storyline and cutaway scenes.
ADDED AFTER PLAYING THE GAME FOR LONGER
This is a solid platformer, and it maintains some of the excellent elements of the original, while adding great updates and RPG elements and a storyline/cut scenes. You can save your progress and it also offers really neat upgrades...
one thing i have to mention is that, like most standard, western platforms, this scrolls from left to right, while the original, at least in the first stage, scrolled right to left. While jarring for some gamers, I think they should have kept one level like this in tradition of the original. Just a personal note.
That aside, this is a great platformer and revival and upgrade of a cult classic.

the jumping kinda isn't. It's one of the few games on my shelf that's purely a guilty pleasure; I can't defend it, but I was willing to buy it.
(sadly, I put it on the shelf only to realize I already own this game. I'm an idiot. ;_;)
