Purchase options and add-ons

Introduced in 1961, the Gibson SG is Gibson’s biggest-selling guitar of all time, and is synonymous with Angus Young (AC/DC lead guitarist), Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) and Robby Krieger (The Doors). The SG was originally produced as a more easily manufactured ‘mass-production’ version of the Les Paul, sales of which were diminishing at the time, but the solid-bodied SG (‘Solid Guitar’) soon became a revered instrument in its own right. Superbly illustrated and designed, this manual includes case studies of key models – everything from a vintage SG ‘Les Paul’ to a 2011 SG 50th Anniversary model – but also gives appropriate attention to today’s affordable Epiphone versions, Specials, Juniors and Melody Makers.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Paul Balmer, who has written six Haynes Manuals about guitars, is the son of dance band drummer Bill Balmer. Paul played drums from the age of 11 in the Merseybeat boom of the 1960s. He built his own kit from bits and pieces and, having no other option, did his own maintenance. His perfectly preserved 1964 Premier kit will be examined and maintained as a case study. His father’s ‘bitsa’ 1940s dance band kit will provide a useful historical reference. Paul lives in Northamptonshire.

Giving it 5 stars because the Gibson guitar world is starved for a specific book on SGs beyond John Bulli 's good, but old B&W one. I am amazed that no one until now has published an "SG-only" book when there have been recent books on other Gibson models. While it could have been better ( see the 3 star review), I'll drink even warm water when I 'm thirsty .

Great glossy color photos of the Gibson SG models, both inside the body cavities and the outsides. That way you can tell the real from the Chinese fakes - on the insides. Includes some photos of closely related Gibson guitars, as well as Epiphone SG models.

Informative book on the SG. Worth buying if that’s what your into.

If you are just interested in Technical specs you get history to go with it. Setup and repair is very good to have even if its not why you want the book. As hard as it is to learn to play guitar why not learn how to fix guitar? So many players are scared to touch a adjustment on a guitar. This book will explain some of the mystery away. 1/2 of a trip to a Luthier will pay for this book. If you are fan of the SG buy the book. It could be more in depth and there could be more history but its way more information than most people have ever had on a SG.
