Banksia spinulosa

Description

A woody, medium shrub/straggly tree, usually multi-stemmed. In an open area it becomes a compact, symmetrical shrub but in dense shade it can become spindly and tall. The cylindrical flower spikes are 6-7cms wide x 6-15ms tall, yellow to golden in colour and appear over a short period from Autumn through early Winter. Woody cones follow the flowers. The long, narrow, green leaves are linear and almost pine needle like. Good as specimen plantings in Australian native gardens, as informal screens or for bush regeneration. Great food source for bees and nectar feeding birds and good shelter for small birds. Tolerates soils ranging from light through to moderately heavy with good moisture and drainage.
