Through an analysis of ancient glosses on the term “bózòng” (博綜) culled from Buddhist sources, this paper, originally published in 2009, demonstrates the unnecessary dearth of data in general dictionaries of the Chinese language which results from the almost total neglect of traditional Buddhist literature.

Informal and unrevised bibliography on the study of early Chán Buddhism and Late Medieval / Early Vernacular Chinese; with entries until 2004, based on "Studies in the Language of Zu-tang ji"
This is a more detailed / updated introduction of the langugage of Chinese Buddhism based on our latest research of Buddhist Chinese, which is a mordern Chinese historical linguistic category applied to a form of written Chinese originated for and used in Buddhist texts, including the translations into Chinese of Indian Buddhist scriptures and all Chinese works of Buddhism composed by Chinese monks and lay Buddhists in the past. We attempt to answer in this paper the following questions: What is Buddhist Chinese? What is the main difference between Buddhist Chinese and non-Buddhist Chinese? What role did this language play in the history of Chinese language development? And what is the value of this language for the Chinese Historical Linguistics?

Chinese Transcription of Buddhist Terms in the Late Hàn Dynasty2023 •
This dataset is a compilation of Chinese transcriptions of Buddhist terms produced by translators from the late Hàn period. It is a compilation of the previous works of Coblin (1983), Karashima (2010), Vetter (2012), Hill, Nattier, Granger, and Kollmeier (2020) for the Chinese transcriptions. To these were added phonological reconstructions of the Chinese terms for late Hàn from Schuessler (2009) and Middle Chinese from Baxter and Sagart (2014a), as well as the Gandhari equivalents of Sanskrit and Pali terms from Baums and Glass (2002). This dataset, shared on Zenodo, aims at being the new state-of-the-art dataset on Buddhist transcription material and can be used by anyone working on Hàn Chinese phonology and will help better understanding the possible language sources of the Chinese transcriptions, as well as the phonology of the target Chinese dialects.

Abstract: Chán Buddhist literature is not only an important source for the study of religious thought during the Chinese late medieval and early modern periods, but also constitutes a treasure trove for investigating the development of the colloquial language of the respective periods, both in terms of semantics and syntactic constructions. Since the editors of Chán Buddhist literature—such as the Recorded Saying and Transmission of the Lamp texts—claimed to convey the “living words” of the patriarchs and masters, numerous vernacularisms were integrated in the dialogue sections of the texts, and the use of traditional Buddhist terminology was often reduced to a minimum. Frequently, Chán Buddhist texts are among the earliest sources in which these colloquialisms surfaced. In this paper, we focus on expressions which derive from the colloquial language of the late Táng and Sòng periods, and which were integrated in Chán Buddhist literature, often assuming a particular metaphorical meaning in the rhetorical structure of the texts. We reconstruct their original meaning, their use in the Chán texts, as well as their further development in Sinitic languages and dialects. Besides contributing to a better understanding of the vocabulary used in the enigmatic language of Chán literature and the metaphorical mapping of originally colloquial expressions in a religious context, in this preliminary study, we also hope to contribute to a better understanding of the development of semantic items from the perspective of historical linguistics, their complex paths of metaphorical extensions, as well as their usage in local linguistic contexts. In addition, the case studies also illustrate the transformative force of religion on the development of language, and the complex interplay between religious ideas and linguistic expression. Keywords: Chan Buddhism; metaphorical expressions; Chinese dialect words; Chan Buddhist literature of the Song Dynasty; Buddhism and linguistics; Chinese historical linguistics
This seminar will explore the variety of descriptions of the ideal figure of the bodhisattva found in Mahāyāna literature translated into Chinese. We will also look at attempts to lay out a path to bodhisattvahood in this literature and in Chinese commentaries. We will then go on to examine the representations (textual and visual) of some major Bodhisattvas in the East Asian tradition such as Guanyin/Kannon, Dizang/Jizō, etc. Students will be introduced to the use of specialised research tools for the study of East Asian religions such as dictionaries, concordances, indices and databases.
