Police: Man charged with killing girlfriend in east Columbus shooting

Javier Inirio is charged with the murder of Josephine Banks.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man has been arrested and charged in the fatal shooting of his girlfriend in east Columbus.

Officers with the Columbus Division of Police were called to the 600 block of Kimball Place, located near Interstate 70, around 7:10 a.m. Friday.

Upon arrival, officers located 24-year-old Josephine Banks suffering from apparent gunshots wounds. Banks was taken to Grant Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 8:01 a.m.

According to Franklin County Municipal Court records, Banks’ live-in boyfriend 33-year-old Javier Inirio was charged with her murder. 

Court documents state Inirio told police Banks was angry and brandished a handgun. He stated he grabbed ahold of the gun and a struggle ensued. 

During the struggle, she ended up on the ground and a shot was fired. While on the ground, Inirio said he pulled the gun from her hand and then fired two shots at her.

Inirio is currently being held on a $1 million bond. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 6 at 9 a.m.
