Pseudocarcinus gigas, Tasmanian giant crab
(Lamarck, 1818)

The Tasmanian giant (or king) crab is one of the largest crabs in the world, found in the southern seas of Australia. The crab shows some obvious sexual dimorphism; male crabs are much bigger and heavier than females, and the females show different coloration. (The crab in the picture is most likely a male individual)

Reaching 46 cm of “shell”-width and a stunning 13 kilograms, this species is commercially fished for its meat and because of that, very vulnerable for over-fishing.
