  • There are a total of 34 monasteries and temples in Ellora. These temples are carved in the Charanandri hills.
  • The site of Ellora cave temple is spread across an area of over 2 km. These temples are carved side-by-side in an uninterrupted sequence, making them one of the most complex and unique temple designs in the world.
  • The Ellora Caves are devoted to Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism. Their presence in the same complex shows the sense of tolerance that was generally a way of life in ancient India.
  • The rock-cut cave temples at Ellora date back to the 5th and the 12th century. The caves are all numbered, and Caves 1&12 are the oldest of the lot, dating back to the 5th century. These caves are Buddhist caves, and show traces of Mahayana philosophy of Buddhism.
  • The most popular monument of all, the world-famous Kailasa Temple is a part of the Brahmanical group of caves (13-29). The Kailasa Temple is in Cave 16, and is one of the most beautiful temples in the world.
  • Caves 30-34 are Jain cave temples, and they were excavated sometime between the 9th and the 12th century.
