This is an antique Japanese Butsudan (literal meaning, "Buddha altar" or "House of Buddha") from late Meiji period (1890's - 1910's). It is an altar that is often found in temples and homes in Japan. 

The Butsudan is a wooden cabinet with doors which contains memorial tables for ancestors and in accordance with sect affliation, representations of various Buddhist divinities. It also inclues incense,candles and flowers offered by the devout at simple daily services.

Fine details on this altar from the transom along the top front that depicts all auspicious motifs.  The interior of the altar and doors are decorated hand-painted Makie pictures, incredible details throughout.
