Joel Greene
For the past year or two we have heard that ALL autoimmunity is the result of plant-based foods. Many people have turned to Carnivore and Keto Diets as a way to eliminate potential bad actors from their diet. And that works for many, but not all. Months before this glycoprotein was on ANYONE'S radar Joel did a talk about it. N-glycolylneuraminic acid is a glycoprotein produced by mammals. But it appears to have species-specific characteristics that may trigger an immune response. It is incorporated into the cell membrane and may become the target of inflammatory mediators that end up destroying important tissue in your body. What do you need to know to protect yourself? And what do you do if you suspect its at the root of your own autoimmunity?

SHR # 2546 :: Is This Glycoprotein Responsible For The Autoimmune Effects of Red Meat
Show Notes:
[4:00] What is autoimmunity?
- the immune systems attacks “bricks” that it perceives as “not self”.
[6:10] Glycans make up most of the membranes in the body.
- 5-NGU is a glycoprotein that is in meat and gets incorporated into your body.
[9:16] Why does red meat seem to be a culprit, and why is 5-NGU primarily in red meat?
- When NGU becomes part of the cell membrane, it leaves a non-native sugar sticking out of the membrane for antibodies to attack.
- It is like cellular whack-a-mole.
- 5-NGU is a xeno-autoantigen.
[16:25] Early physical culture anecdotes to steer clear of using one protein source exclusively.
- Eating too much of any substrate will most likely result in an intolerance or allergy.
[32:30] CBD as a disruptor of IL-6 to prevent covid symptoms.
[37:20] Alkalinity/ Acidity of beef.
- Neither is good or bad outside of context.
- Excessive meat in the colon has an alkalinizing effect, which is undesirable for good health.
[47:14] Meat fermenting in the colon.
- Linked to cancer-causing compounds.
- Can be offset with fiber in the gut.
[55:20] What to do about glycoprotein overload.
- Let cellular turnover do its thing.
- Balance out the mechanistic action of meat in the diet by adding fiber into the diet.
- Apple pectin, from peels, are complimentary.
- They are long chain fiber and feed 8x the akermannsia than regular fiber.
- Resistant starchesd are also a godd option, in moderation, if IBS, colitis, etc is not present in the colon.
[1:04:41] Inulin is addressed.
[1:05:34] Age specific effects of excessive protein intake.
