Install GE-Proton
(you can skip this step if you already have it installed)
  1. Switch to Desktop Mode
  2. Open the Discover app and install ProtonUp-Qt
  3. Start the ProtonUp-Qt app and Add the latest GE-Proton version
Install the Steam version of Final Fantasy XIV
  1. Go to the Steam store and install Final Fintasy XIV Online
    (Free Trial or buy the base version)
  2. Once installed, click the cog icon and open the game Properties
  3. In Compatibility tab pick GE-Proton version you have installed
  4. In General tab set LAUNCH OPTIONS to:
    NOSTEAM=1 %command%
Notes
  • Be sure to use the ingame backup (gear icons on character selection) to save your system and character settings before changing Proton versions.
  • The game lags quite bad on Wifi. To fix this turn on the Developer Mode from Steam Deck settings and in the (now visible) Developer settings turn off Wifi Power Management and restart.

This guide was EXACTLY what I needed, and it worked. I feel like this information should be prominently displayed on the steam store page for both the full and free versions of the game.

Thank you very much!

Thank you for sharing this! I have been trying to figure this out today after renewing my old PC sub just to play on Steam Deck. I even went and bought the Steam version and was not having success. This easy guide got me in so i can now update and hopefully play soon!
