TEXAS — Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, announced Monday that he is recovering from a surgery that removed gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors. He underwent the procedure at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Castro said he expects to be recovering at home for the next several weeks before returning to Washington to serve his community in San Antonio.

“Last summer, doctors discovered these small, slow-growing, and mostly asymptomatic tumors following a series of tests,” stated Castro. “My prognosis is good... Thank you to the doctors, nurses, and medical staff at MD Anderson Cancer Center and the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio for their care and treatment, and thank you to my family for their love and support.”

Castro has represented Texas' 20th congressional district since 2013. He is also an attorney and was a member of the Texas House of Representatives. Among other issues, he works to improve Latino representation in film, literature, journalism and other media.
