OU Opens Big 12 Championship With Bedlam on Wednesday

NORMAN – Oklahoma men's basketball opens the 2023 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship against Oklahoma State on Wednesday, March 8. Tip is at 8:30 p.m. inside T-Mobile Center.

Wednesday's game against the Cowboys will be broadcast on ESPNU with Rich Hollenberg and Fran Fraschilla on the call. Fans may also listen on the Sooner Sports Radio Network (KRXO 107.7 FM The Franchise in Oklahoma City; KTBZ 1430 AM in Tulsa; Varsity Radio App) with Toby Rowland and Kevin Henry announcing.

Oklahoma earned the 74-60 victory against then-No. 22/22 TCU on Saturday, March 4 to conclude the regular season. Tanner Groves led the Sooners with a season-high 23 points on 7-of-16 shooting and fellow senior Grant Sherfield added 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Groves added 10 rebounds and recorded his fifth double-double of the season. Milos Uzan recorded his second consecutive game with double-digit points, finishing with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting.

SCOUTING THE COWBOYS

Mike Boynton is in his sixth season at Oklahoma State and has compiled a 104-87 record. OSU is 17-14 this season and 8-10 in the Big 12. OSU is 1-2 in neutral site games. The Cowboys finished the Baha Mar Hoops tournament 1-1 and dropped its lone contest in the Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational to Virginia Tech.

Four Cowboys average double-digit points. Byrce Thompson averages a team-best 11.9 points and Kalib Boone adds 11.5 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest. Avery Anderson III averaged 11.1 points and a team-best 3.4 assists per outing. John-Michael Wright scores 10.0 points per game. Moussa Cisse records team highs in rebounds (8.0) and blocks (2.0) per game.

Oklahoma State is ranked in the top 100 in five NCAA DI categories. OSU is 16th in blocks per game (4.9), 22nd in field goal percentage defense (40.3), 69th in 3-point percentage defense (32.0), 85th in scoring defense (66.8) and 95th in rebounds per game (36.1). Cisse is 25th in NCAA DI in blocks per game and 36th in blocks (55).

RANKING SUMMARY

Oklahoma is ranked in the top 100 in three NCAA Division I categories. OU is 53rd in 3-point percentage defense (31.4), 66th in field goal percentage (46.5%) and 72nd in effective field goal percentage (53.1%). The Sooners are second in the conference in 3-point percentage (35.4), defensive rebounds per game (25.4) and effective field goal percentage. OU is third in fouls per game (16.2), scoring defense (67.9) and 3-point percentage defense.

Grant Sherfield is 36th nationally in 3-point percentage (40.3%), 56th in free throw percentage (85.9%), 63rd in 3-pointers made (81) and 74th in 3-pointers per game (2.6). Sherfield is first in the league in 3-pointers made and second 3-pointers per game and field goal attempts (405). He is third in 3-point percentage, 3-point attempts and third in free throw percentage. Tanner Groves is 74th in the nation and third in the league in defensive rebounds per game (5.9).

Sherfield is 27th among active NCAA Division I career leaders in assists (527), 34th in scoring average (15.3), 37th in assist average (4.6) and 42nd in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8). Sherfield is one of 17 active DI players with 1,700-plus points and 500-plus assists. Groves is 76th in career rebounds (760).

2023 ALL-BIG 12 HONORS

Grant Sherfield and Jalen Hill received All-Big 12 Honorable Mention accolades and Milos Uzan was selected to the All-Big 12 Freshman Team as announced by the conference on March 5. It is their first postseason Big 12 honors.

The trio join C.J. Noland (2022 Big 12 All-Freshman Team) and Tanner Groves (2022 All-Big 12 Honorable Mention) as current Sooners to earn postseason accolades. 

2023 PHILLIPS 66 BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP

Oklahoma opens the 2023 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship against in-state foe Oklahoma State on Wednesday, March 8. The Sooners are 2-5 against the Cowboys in conference championship play. Oklahoma last topped OSU in the 2015 Big 12 Tournament quarterfinal round, 64-49. The two programs last met in the 2018 first round and the Cowboys earned the 71-60 victory.

The Sooners are 24-22 (.522) in the Big 12 Championship. OU's 52.2% winning percentage ranks fourth among current members of the conference. The Sooners have appeared in the Big 12 title game five times and won the Big 12 tournament title in 2001, 2002 and 2003.

With a Sooners' victory on Wednesday night, Oklahoma is slated to face No. 2 seed Texas on Thursday, March 9 at 6 p.m. OU is 4-3 against the Longhorns and won the first four postseason meetings.
