The photo above is the famous Orchard House, where Louisa May Alcott wrote and set Little Women.  Louisa’s father, Amos Bronson Alcott, purchased the land in 1857 for $945.  Located in Concord, Massachusetts on Lexington Road, Orchard House began as two separate houses (one small farmhouse and a larger manor house built between 1690-1720) set on approximately twelve acres of land surrounded by an apple orchard, which gave Mr. Alcott the inspiration to appropriately name the home, Orchard House.

Orchard House is appropriately named for the orchard which contained over forty apple trees.  Mr. Alcott constructed Orchard House by joining a smaller farmhouse to the rear of the larger house.  The Alcott family moved into the home in 1858 and lived there until 1877.

Louisa’s Chamber (Note the portrait and writing desk!)

Orchard House is still standing and much of its interior is still preserved to the way it looked when the Alcotts were residing in the home.  According to its website, 80% Orchard House’s furnishings were owned by the Alcotts.  Guided tours are available and Orchard House is open year round.  If you have a chance, browse the website.  There are photos and panoramic views of the rooms as well as visitor information.  I hope to one day pay a visit to Orchard House and walk through the book of Little Women!
