Diahann Carroll

Diahann Carroll, born on July 17, 1935, and passed away on October 4, 2019, was an American actress, singer, and model. She was a trailblazer and a prominent figure in the entertainment industry, breaking barriers for African-American performers. Carroll began her career as a model and gained recognition in the late 1950s for her role in the Broadway musical “House of Flowers.” She became the first African-American woman to win a Tony Award for her performance in the musical “No Strings” in 1962. This achievement marked a significant milestone in the representation of African-American artists on Broadway.

In the 1960s, Carroll gained further fame for her title role in the TV series “Julia” (1968-1971). It was one of the first television shows to star an African-American woman in a non-stereotypical role. Carroll played Julia Baker, a widowed nurse raising her young son, and her portrayal broke racial barriers on television.

Throughout her career, Carroll continued to make appearances on stage, screen, and television. She received an Academy Award nomination for her role in the film “Claudine” (1974) and starred in several successful TV shows, including “Dynasty” and “A Different World.” She also had a successful recording career, releasing numerous albums showcasing her vocal talents.
